Just found last week from showrooms - Acer laptops coming with SuSe linux preloaded for about 45k. Also, IBM is offering a no OS laptop (R50e i think) for 50k (excl. of taxes), and IBM thinkpads have largely been Linux compatible.

IBM ThinkPads are the most Free Software compatible ones. I recommend IBM T21to T23 on the lower end and IBM T40 to T43 on the higher end. IBM X40 is sleek, light weight, 8 hrs battery but costly.
FSF-US gives IBM Thinkpads for FSF Sys Admins.

do the internal modems in them also work?

Ought to. There is the mwave module. Though it is a binary module, it is undet the GPL, and is in the official kernel tree.
Errr ... afaik, RMS is using an IBM thinkpad.

yes, he uses a t20. but he told me that he doesnt use the internal modem, because he doesn't know if a driver exists. If you can send him the details that will be useful. He doesnt have to use an external modem, which he does now.

Just curious.., why does he need the modem anywayz? He is always roaming around. So, having one Internet account is kinda useless. If he has a network card, he can simply hook to the Internet from the network in the place he is visiting (or in the worst case a internet cafe)., download his mails/* and go on.. I thought thats what he does.

...or he can pop into the house of a free software supporter (though not an FSF Friend :) and get NAT'ed and 'Net'ed before getting the roof of his mouth blown off by fiery kebabs and biriyani.
...and I didn't even get the GNU and Linux stickers to distribute at our stall, man!

I did not see the stickers. However, I heard from the other students that it was a picture of an armoured gnu flying with a penguin. :)
We are making some shirts here in GLUGOT (still planning). We are planning to have a black shirt with the words "I use GNU" written on the back with the URL for gnu.org :) If this one becomes successful., we'll probably make some "gnu/hurd" t-shirts too.. :)

Yeah, that's the one.

Niyam had made some extremely nice logos for the T-shirt FSF-I got done earlier (the ones with ``Weave our own code together''). See if you can get hold of that graphic and use it, it rocks. Let me know if you need the files -- I have them lying around on my system someplace.
I wonder how useful it is to make Hurd T-shirts?

I dont know., but maybe because of my constant talking ;-) of the Hurd., there is some eagerness among people in my college to try the Hurd.
