Subject: The KDE-SIG needs (your) help
To: fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-desktop-list(a)redhat.com,
fedora-art-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-docs-list(a)redhat.com,
fedora-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-test-list(a)redhat.com
This is a request for participation:
The KDE-SIG [1] is atm lacking active contributors. And we really need some
help in doing our job to provide a good KDE version in Fedora - especially
with the upcoming KDE 4.0 and the inclusion in Fedora 9.
If you don't know how you could help us here is a list (which is also in the
wiki):
* Packagers: There are so many interesting packages that are not yet packaged
for Fedora. Package it to improve the user experience.
* Reviewers: Only a few persons are doing the kde-related reviews. Help us
reviewing so that more packages could be included.
* Testers: If you love KDE use the development version or the updates-testing
repository and report bugs, bugs, bugs, request enhancements or features. We
need your feedback to improve KDE.
* Bugs: Become a BugZapper and help us with kde-related bugs.
* Documentation writers: The documentation (esp. the DesktopUserGuide) is
GNOME-centered. Help us to provide an equivalent for KDE.
* Release Notes: The few people that are working on the new KDE-Spin are quite
busy with development issues. If you want to help us in writing the release
notes for the next version of Fedora we would give you all the info you need.
* Wiki: Maintain http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE and keep it updated with
end user information.
* Artists: To provide a matching theme for nodoka-metacity-theme and provide
an unified desktop experience.
But this is not a complete list. If you're interested in making KDE in Fedora
better, you're more than welcome.
The list of participants in the wiki is atm not a list of active contributors.
When setting up the wiki the only demand was an interest in KDE to be listed
on this page. This list would be changed in the future to be culled down to
the list of active (or reactivated) participants. This has become necessarely
because there are only (less or more) 3 active contributors atm (plus Than
Ngo). But the list indicates that there are enough people helping with KDE.
If you are interested in joining the KDE-SIG please add your name to this
list, answer to this mail, join us in #fedora-kde at freenode or attend the
weekly KDE-SIG-Meetings (every tuesday 17:00 UTC). I will also add a topic to
the agenda of the meeting next week to introduce new contributors. [2]
The attendance at the SIG-Meetings is of course not required. But this way we
would know of each other. And they are also the main place of discussing the
next steps in the development (besides fedora-devel-list).
If you have any further questions please answer to this mail or write me
directly. And be sure: If your are willing to help you're welcome (regardless
of your skills). :)
Sebastian

Hello,
I was a bit tied up for the last few days and could not give my attention to
this issue and hence the late reply.

FREE SOFTWARE FOUNDATION OF INDIA
18th Oct 2007
Trivandrum
PRESS RELEASE
*Save Kannada From Microsoft's Monopoly*
======================================
http://www.gnu.org.in/node/129
<...>
</quote>
I am a bit surprised that FSF-I has sent out a press release with a title
that is nothing short of promoting linguistic chauvinism. When the draft was
released by Omshivaprakash I raised the following points:
<quote>
A few thoughts about the letter:
1. The main points of the letter - gives adequate focus on the Kannada
language aspects, talks about "lock-in" and benefit of free software.
2. Can a few point about the ODF vs. OOXML and India's stand on the issue be
added? I think this is very relevant to the situation.
3. Can we increase the emphasis of quality of localisation with free
software.
4. Maybe quote a few points from the IOSN webpage http://www.iosn.net/ on
why developing countries such as India would find it more advantageous to
use FOSS based solutions.
While the language issue would stir our passions, on its own it would not
present a compelling case since Free s/w Kannada localisation is also still
backward.
Hope these points are taken into consideration when finalising the letter(if
this a draft).
</quote>
The issue at hand is more related to the 'ISO standards' and 'healthy
business practises' rather than 'language' and FSF-I's press release should
have reflected that. The FSF should always ensure that its stand on any
issue conforms to certain scientific rationale and cannot and should not
promote any petty interests but should focus on convincing people logically.
The language argument that has been raised does not hold water because the
free software localisation to Kannada also is still very backward. Our only
hope is that free software promotes a healthy evolution of the system with
quality and quantity.
While the "Save Kannada campaign" is not under FSF-I, I would like to urge
them too to address the intellect rather than the baser human emotions.
The only was to protect any language is to ensure that a strong local
economy is generated around it. This can happen only when the knowledge is
localised and sufficient trained labour can be developed around it. Then,
capital by the businesses along with pro-people government policies along
with constant pressure by the people will ensure that the economy grows
healthily and only then will that language survive else it will end up like
Sanskrit, Latin, Pali and others.
Thank you,
Regards

Hi,
I am using Gnome and I use the Keyboard Preferences applet to change
the keyboard layout. I am able to type the alphabets along with
diacritics. But how do I type the conjuct consonants? For example how do
I type the 'ನ್ನ' in the text 'ಕನ್ನಡ'? What key combinations can I use to
get it?
Thanks
Avinash.
Hi Vikram,
Could you please help me to rewrite the draft?

Fidel Castro on Che
CHE
I make a halt in my daily struggle to bow my head in respect and gratitude
to the exceptional combatant who fell in combat on October 8th, forty years
ago; for the example he passed on to us as leader of his Rebel Army Column,
crossing the swampy grounds of the former provinces of Oriente and Camag?ey,
while being chased by enemy troops. He was the liberator of the city of
Santa Clara and the mastermind of voluntary work; he accomplished honorable
political missions abroad and served as messenger of militant
internationalism in East Congo and Bolivia. He built a new awareness in our
America and the world.
I thank him for what he tried and failed to do in his home country, because
he was like a flower prematurely severed from its stem.
He left to us his unmistakable literary style. He was elegant, swift and
true to every detail of whatever happened to cross his mind. He was a
predestinate, but he didn't know it. He still fights with us and for us.
Yesterday, we commemorated the 31st anniversary of the killing of all
passengers and the crew of a Cubana airliner blown in mid-air, and we are on
the threshold of the tenth anniversary of the cruel and unjust imprisonment
of the five Cuban anti-terrorist heroes. We likewise bow our heads in
respect to them all.
It was with great emotion that I watched and heard the commemoration
ceremony on TV.

Dear Friends,
<http://savekannada.googlepages.com/Mdollar-campaign.gif/Mdollar-campaign-fu…>Join
hands with us in opposing Microsoft's "Letter of Intent" with Government of
Karnataka.
Microsoft has for long ignored issues relating to Kannada on their Operating
Systems. Despite several movements, campaigns to bring the issues to
Microsoft's attention, things have just been the same. What more? To push
its own standards and grab monopoly, Microsoft has signed a "Letter of
Intent" with Government of Karnataka recently.
Implications? many! Microsoft would get an unfair edge in the state despite
its negligence towards Kannada language.
