Maybe it's cause the web is still more or less standards compliant for the parts that most users use.
Also I have found that quoting just abv a closed solution, then allowing the customer to bargain just below works best. Phukat gets you a derisive "another free simcardwalla" look. So dont even offer a cd for free. People only value things when they pay an arm and leg.
Very true! I have installed GNU/Linux on customers' machines for free, just for promotion and they don't have any value for it. They treat it as a demo and go back to doze as soon as they find it a different environment. They don't even bother to make an effort to understand it. Now I only give live demos and provide live CDs just to let them get the hang of it and that too, only to those who show a little interest.
