I am also a newbie to Linux and agree that man pages do provide quite a good help. But I feel they are terse and at times you don't have a clue what they mean .

i thik all newbies should first read somthign like  :

*Linux Installation and Getting Started
        by Matt Welsh
 ( for a total newbie)

then probably the HOWTOS for specific topics.

and last u can always search on google.
