hi
I have been hunting for a problem definition for my b.e. project.
Well, the search has been narrowed down to Web Server Clustering.
I've seen the stuff at www.linuxvirtualserver.org
and at lcic.org, But haven't been able to find a precise problem.
Has anybody on the list worked in that area???
If yes could you direct me or suggest a few problem defn.s fit for us at
b.e. level??

this thread is an old 1. But since i layed my eyes
on it just now.....let me throw some light on this 1.
Wat u r mentionin abt LVS is basically load
balancing. Though in lay man terms u can call it web
server clustering..in the right technical perspective
it's basically load balancing.
AFAIk......there r many load balancing alogos
avaiilable out there........rangin from
--> simple dns round robin to....
--> Virtual Server via NAT
--> Virtual Server via IP Tunneling
--> Virtual Server via Direct Routing
U should really check the NAT nd IP tunneling
algos...efficient way of gettin thingz done. I haven;t
done ny benchmarkin though. But Even load
balancing(clusterin of web servers) has a major
prob.......
creatin redundancy at the Load balancer in case of
ur the main web server load balancer goin down...
Would luv to help u with the proj....If ur keen on
takin it up just let me know.

what i wanted help with was finding a good problem definition in the area!!
we have thought about implementing:
-load sharing with geographical information....if u get what i mean.

Finding ans is much more easier than setting the write questions :-))

make it something more attractive ....
I've seen BE examiners ...... and these guys (really very few of them
understand GNU world) will make lot of noice regarding such projects ..
just try to get some company which can allow you to do this project with
their infrastructure then your college profs might agree ..
or u need to find a really reallyy good problem defination ..
simply benchmarking a setup can not be a good BE project ... and i doubt
whether ur college allows the same ...
so don't just benchmark a setup .... if u set those setups and then
benchmark then they might agree ....
but b4 that talk to your college professors and see wht is their opinion
(which is very important)

being trained. Some have already been trained. I was one of the
lecturers at one such training session.

i am in the process of conducting a Linux Workshop
at the RajaRam S. College Of Engineering, Kolhapur.
Could we chalkup an agenda that i can follow over
there....i hav somethin on my mind.

systems n applications.
--> Installing Linux nd FreeBSD
--> File System layout
--> X config
--> Network config
--> File/Print Servers

Just to add to what Nagarjuna states. As far as the open source
movement is concerned, it is okay to use some amounts of closed source
software. It is also okay to distribute open source software that the
user is not allowed to modify.
Take Imici for example. It comes with the source code, but the user is
not allowed to read, modify or redistribute modified versions. The
source is provided only so that you can compile it on unsupported
systems.
That is not something we want to promote, and that is one of the reasons
I don't use Imici, even though it is more stable than any of the GPLed
messengers. (The other reason is that it has a crappy interface).
