i have some reservations regarding private conversations on a public list :
/quote: 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. /endquote
Private conversations imo, should be avoided on a public list and its better for everyone to have open communication. In a private conversation (as above) if the situation escalates to a flame war there is no way to prove " who said what " and why someone found it offensive. Messages can be easily edited before being reposted and its more difficult to prove harrasment. Hence its better to have an objection which is there for everyone to read in B&W so the offender will be more careful about their language and what they write.

Few points:
Mention at the top that new members are put on moderation until they show that they understand and follow the rules. This could be anywhere between 2 posts to never.
Point number 11. No apostrophe in URLs. It is a plural, not a possessive. Also mention that pasting whole articles could amount to copyright violation, which is not something this list encourages.
Point number 10. Put the acronym examples on different lines to make it easier to distinguish them.
Point number 16. Top posting is not the only reason why members can be put on temporary moderation. Persistent violation of rules could get you on moderation. Excessive flaming, abuse of other members, persistent overquoting, top-posting, or posting of large messages. Sending forwards/chain mails to the list, or individually to list members (if they complain to the list-admin) or to the list-admin/list-owner address will also get you onto moderation.
Point number 17 is replaced with point number 16 so can be dropped.
Also mention that as far as possible we prefer putting people on moderation to banning them from the list, but in extreme cases, for example, a member indulging in continuous personal attacks against list members, a user can be banned from the list.
I think the rules on the website and the points I've mentioned here cover all situations that at least I've seen in the last 5 years here. I guess if Sagar or Sandesh were still on the list, they'd have something to add.
I'd suggest that we also mention that seniority on the list is no excuse for flouting the rules :P but I'll throw that out for list members to discus.

Hello All,
Please add one new rule that there is no such word as 'anyways'. Its 'anyway' or many ways. It is a distortion that some K-series soaps started on TV and many have wrongly picked it up.
Regards,
Rony.

lol.
I could pick out a few hundred such colloquialisms borrowed primarily from American television, but our list doesn't endeavour to be correct to the dot on grammar and spellings. We don't even require English to be the medium of communication. One of the cool features of 'conversation mode' lists is that we can always ask for clarification if a particular word could have multiple meanings.
I'd just like that the static content we present to the world be correct.
Ciao,
Philip

Its not about English or grammer, its about using proper singular or plural words according to the need. This basic rule would apply to all languages not just English.
The mail was only to create awareness. 'Any' represents a singular choice/option/entity so 'way' cannot be plural.
How does this sounds.....Rony is a members of this list. Philip is a computer engineers.
The word 'anyways' is so glaringly wrong that everytime anyone uses it anywhere, I feel like yelling, "No No its not anyways its anyway anyway man !!". :D Whats more surprising is that it is used by those who speak English in a very sophisticated or stylish way. My own classmates who I met after many years use this word and their English is otherwise much better than mine. :)
Regards,
Rony.

I take far more objection to people saying Philips is a computer engineer. Primarily because there's only one of me, and secondly because neither of us are computer engineers.

Fellas,
The list guidelines seem fine. I very strongly feel it should encompass acceptance of FLOSS related dicussions too.
You will agree with me that we have long outgrown just being a *only* gnu-linux mailing list. This seems to be a very important aspect left out. Over all job well done.

The guidelines don't need to state this. They clearly state that the poster should decide at his discretion whether something is on topic or off.

my 2 paise:
1. top posting is a breach of ettiquette - but message recycling is a crime - this must be emphasised
2. with respect to bad language - i dont like it. if you think that it only affects lady members of the list you are sadly mistaken. Any guy who uses four letter words should be automatically banned. btw, who is the lady member you are referring to? (in fact, the only indian guy who uses four letter words on a regular basis is a guy using the monicker of 'oldmonk', fortunately he is not a member of this list so can be ignored)
