I've been using abiword for quite some time (since ver 0.7) it has improved by leaps and bounds. Previously, page setup was not available and the import from MS .doc files was flaky at best. Also, most of the formatting used to be screwed up, even simple tabs.
I am at present using 0.9.5 and it works beautifully. I use kde and have only used abiword-gtk. also I found it was usually not possible to upgrade without uninstalling the older version. The dictionary and spell check was somewhat screwed in 0.9.3 but works well with 0.9.5.
