AFAIK, MS2003 uses webDAV, prior versions of Exchange used MAPI. Novell connectoer for Exchange has been made opensource. You can use Evolution with MS2003. You can also use Kontact (It integrated the connector which was made GPL'ed by Novell). I have not tested Kontact connecting to Exchange. With POP/IMAP you will only get mails. With Novell connector you will get calendering/addressbook and all the other features.
Novell Connector is integrated into new versions of Evolution. Novell Linux desktop (NLD) comes finely tuned for these features and integrates very well with Exchange.
