idea of free software - part 2
Well, the goddamn point is "free software is not about software." It is about deciding how to make something free for modification; it is about actually allowing something to be modified; and it is about helping other people help themselves.
All this sounds really benign. But the truth is free software is relatively nascent.
I personally feel that free software is beneficial to community welfare. But still there needs to be some control on "putting ideas out there." Most of us has not really thought in this direction.
Take for e.g., an application you built. You dedicated a website for your source code. If others do have some antipathy against you, they might resort to anti-social activities. They can hack your site change the code, and then corrupt your program setup. People will download the application, and then 'poof'; their system crashed. They always seek someone for blame. Where would be the first place to look? Your source code!!! Because your source code will always have a reference to your identity.
I believe we really have not done anything to discourage people to resort to such (anti-social) activities. But I do have a solution even if it is not the solution: before you do distribute your application and put the source online, you have to submit it to a reviewing committee. This committee will take care of conflict issues. They will, say you have actually used this person's idea. Did you come about with your idea independently? If yes, then they would document it as your version. They might think of some intelligent way to reference to your version. Thus, it is this way conflicts can be settled.
But how should such an organization survive? Public funding!!! Well, that is what I could only think of... There should be an organization like this setout in every country of the world. This would be like taking freedom to another level...just think about it.
