Request for comments/suggestions on codema thread about "Our stand on ethical instant messengers"

Dear all, I propose that we post about how people can judge instant messengers.I have started a thread on codema regarding the same https://codema.in/d/CTeAEuGh/our-stand-on-ethical-instant-messengers . The current write-up is a bit WhatsApp centred and also explains the concepts of decentralization, federation and peer-to-peer communications. Make this list available on gmane/gwene

Dear Admins, Could you please make this list available as gwene/gmane newsgroup? Earlier fsf-friends was available as gmane.org.fsf.india.fsf-friends. But it looks like that, that is also disconnected now. At least it looks like so. I posted a message today but it did not appear on the newsgroup. Why am I requesting? - Lists available as newsgroups makes it easy to subscribe using nntp clients. And it doesn’t clutter the mailboxes if we don’t check mails for, say, about a month. Emacs mailing lists are available as: gmane.emacs.bugs gmane.emacs.devel gmane.emacs.emacsconf gmane.emacs.gnus.general gmane.emacs.gnus.user gmane.emacs.help gmane.emacs.humanities gmane.emacs.orgmode gmane.emacs.tangents Posting to these mailing lists is allowed without subscribing. So users can post to mailing lists and read replies (thread) via newsgroup. If the user verifies the email-id then they can post directly to the newsgroup. Admins may contact Lars for help. He is really helpful and generous person.

Right time to tell people about alternates of WhatsApp

We have got a perfect opportunity to bombard all our social media accounts to tell people about WhatsApp’s new terms and condition. And perhaps tell them about alternatives. I have shared my matrix id for public communication and Signal for those who already have my cell number. A doubt about renaming a package published under GPLv3+

Dear FSF India community, I wish to get answer to a specific doubt, and I feel that this is a good place to get it resolved. I have recently published a software under GPLv3+. It so happens that a collaborator of mine is insisting on changing the name of the package. However, since the package is already in a public domain, I feel that it is not permitted by the license to rename it. As per my understanding, a modification is allowed but then it must involve some change to the underlying source code, not mere renaming of the package. Also, since we are the authors of the original package also, would it be appropriate to not explicitly credit the authors of the original package in case we are allowed to publish the package with the exactly same source code but different name? Dear All, The MiniDebConf India Content team would like to call for proposals for the MiniDebConf India 2021[1] conference, which will take place online, from January 23rd to 24th, 2021. # Introduction MiniDebConf India, organised by the Debian India community and supported by Debian, will be streamed online so you can participate wherever you are. Aims to introduce and propagate Debian and Free Software in Indian subcontinent. We are currently set up for talks in English, Hindi and Malayalam. However, if you are more comfortable presenting in another language from the subcontinent, we would be more than happy to consider your proposal! The event will run from 1000 to 2100 hours IST (0430-1530 UTC) over two days. # Submitting an Event You can now submit an event proposal[2]. Events are not limited to traditional presentations or informal sessions (BoFs): we welcome submissions of tutorials, performances, art installations, debates, or any other format of event that you think would be of interest to the Debian community. Regular sessions may either be 20 or 45 minutes long (including time for questions), other kinds of sessions (workshops, demos, lightning talks, …) could have different durations. Please choose the most suitable duration for your session and explain any special requests. In order to submit a talk, you will need to create an account on the site. We suggest that Debian Salsa account holders (including DDs and DMs) use their Salsa login when creating an account. However, this isn’t required, as you can sign up with an e-mail address and password. # Timeline - - Talk Submission deadline: Sunday, January 10th 2021 - - Acceptance notification: Monday, January 11th 2021 # Topics can be anything that is relevant to Debian and Free Software. # Online Talks We expect speakers to pre-record their talks in advance. Live talks at an online conference are prone to technical problems, resulting in bad quality videos. We strongly encourage you to record your presentations as instructed here[3]. You can interact with the audience on the IRC channel. # Code of Conduct The event is covered by a Code of Conduct[4] designed to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort. The code applies to all attendees, including speakers, and to the content of all presentations.
