GCC Screencast Tutorial

I have made a screencasted tutorial on GCC. This tutorial, still in the beta stage, is aimed at teaching absolute beginners (Turbo C/C++ users?) how to use GCC. You can find the video at: http://glug-nith.org/~rishi/download/gcc.ogg Right now it does not contain any audio. I plan to keep the audio separate from the video to make it easy to add voice to the tutorial. In this regard, I invite people who would be eager to lend their voice to this screencast. Speakers of English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil, Oriya, Telegu, and any other Indian language are specially welcome. If you intend to lend your voice please let me know. I am planning to write a script to ensure uniformity in translations done by different people. After reading a post in ThinkDigit Forums, I visited DRM FAQ page in Yashraj Films website. Here are some interesting FAQs. 1. What is DRM? Digital Rights management (DRM) is a set of technologies that enables you to own copyrighted material in a digital format, and use them based on the rights given to you. 3. What computer should I use to download my music? You should download your music to the ONE computer where you keep your digital music. The music can only be played from the computer through which the license purchase is done, which will provide unlimited playback of the track on this computer. 5. What is the format of downloaded files? All tracks are downloaded in Microsoft Windows Media 9 (wma) format. These files are protected by the Microsoft Windows DRM software. 6. What can I do with the downloaded music files? By purchasing music from Yash Raj Films, you can play the files on the computer where you purchased the license from. The license purchased will provide unlimited playback of a song only on the computer used to purchase the license.You can only play the downloaded music files on Windows Media Player 9.0 and above Windows Media Player. You can also make upto a maximum of 2 Audio CDs for the downloaded media files. 11. Can I transfer a downloaded song track to an external music device or another computer? No, currently you cannot transfer a downloaded song. The license purchased will provide unlimited playback of a song only on the computer used to purchase the license. Licenses will not be transferable to any other computer or other portable music devices. However you can create upto 2 Audio CDs which can be played on any compatible Audio device. 12. Why is my downloaded music not playing? You need Microsoft Windows Media player 9 or above to listen to music or burn it to a CD. 14. Why am I getting a "License Error" or "License Must Be Purchased" screen? It seems like a license was not issued for the file. This can happen due to using a browser other than Microsoft Internet Explorer, which is required and the only supported browser for license downloads or because of a network issue while license delivery was taking place. 15. Can I copy my downloaded song / file on to another computer? The music can only be played from the computer through which the purchase is done and the license delivered to. However, you can copy the file to another computer, but you need to buy a new license to play this track. On playback, the Windows Media Player will request for a license. You need to purchase a new license for this new machine. 16. Can I download music on my MAC? Not at the moment. Complete FAQ on DRM at Yashraj Website No other browser than Internet Explorer can be used, No other Media player than Windows Media Player can be used, No other Operating System than Windows can be used to download or play these files. These downloaded music will be licensed to play only on a computer. You cannot copy this to your portable device or another computer, you need a new license for that. Free network infrastructure for free knowledge and free software in Mumbai

We did it finally, and we will take it forward and expand the free spectrum. Thanks to WSFII for motivating me to take interest in free network, particularly Saul, Fred, and Julian, who donated the routers for this initial setup, and of course more important transfered the technology, The entire freifunk team deserves a special thanks. Report of workshop on Font Encoding Converters

Hi all, A workshop on Font Encoding Converters was held on 6th April, 2007. Outline of the workshop proceedings: * Introduction to font encoding problem * Introduction on Padma Firefox extension (http://padma.mozdev.org) * Status of converters available in Padma (about 40 font families covered) * Unicode Convertion Gateway (http://uni.medhas.org and http://sf.net/projects/unigateway) * Discussion on the reverse engineering techniques applied to design a new converter * Introduction to Punjabi font converters developed by Gurpreet Lehal (about 40 font families covering 120 fonts) A discussion on future course of action lead to the following TODO list: * Setup central place for hosting software, documentation and collaborating effort * Documentation for existing font encoding converters * Documenting the list of font families and unsupported * Create a database of font to font family mappings * Create standard forms that can be filled by a typical user to help create font converter easily (possibly with a gui tool) * Create a C/C++ api * Create test documents to verify each converter * Explore OpenOffice integration * Develop more converters: ** Bengali: Bangsee Alpona, SolaimanLipi, Prothoma Adarshlipiexp, likhan ** Tamil: amudham, shree-tam-0802, tmnews, lt-tm-barani, webtamil, bamini ** Gujarati: Govinda, Surya, Divya ** Oriya: OR-TTSarala ** Malayalam: Shree-mal-0502, ** Devanagari: webdunia, yogeshweb, shree704, sushreeMJ, Boisakhi, Rupali, Satyajit, Shree-dev-0714, Shree-pudhari, MilleniumVarunWeb, Manjusha, ITRDeshdut ** Others: guruLipi, AnmolLipi TCS team working on Telugu GNU/Linux localisation and IIIT Hydearabad have decided to contribute efforts to fulfil the tasks at hand. FSD: campaign to spread Free software awareness in Karnataka

Dear friends, Today I attended a meeting of Forum for Science and Development(FSD), Banglore. They are planning 2 start a campaign to increase the spread the awareness & usage of free software in colleges, schools and among NGOs in Karnataka. The energy, motivation & the spirit in the FSD meeting was very high even though they have slight misconceptions about some terminologies. I hope our Friends like Vijoo, Vickram etc on FSD can correct it soon . But I feel that this campaign needs a lot of volunteers to achieve the goals. I think Free software Community in Bangalore must support & help FSD to make this dream into reality. We can make use of our experiences in Spreading free software awareness in Bangalore Colleges for this purpose. Please don't upload all your new software instantly, but wait a few days until the archive is set up properly for Lenny. At this point, we would like to thank all people who have helped to release Debian 4.0 (Etch). Only through the work of the community we were able to get to this point. It's hard to write "thank you"s for a project as big as etch because there are *so many* people involved in pulling this off, but they deserve recognition for etch as much as we do -- people like the ftp team, the installer team, the CD team, the mirror team, the porters, the release notes editors, the translators, and an amazing group of "release minions" who just worked wherever it was necessary like Steinar Gunderson, all of whose contributions were essential for getting us to this point. Special thanks to all those who have worked through the weekend for those finishing touches that brought the release together, including Ryan, Anthony, Frans, Steve McIntyre, Frank Lichtenheld, Mattias Wadenstein, Alexander Schmehl, and many others. And of course, thanks to the Debian Project as a whole, including the innumerable mass of people who have provided patches, reported bugs against testing or contributed in some other way. This is your release, friends. We also want to apologize to the translations teams and thank them for their work on the localisation of the release notes, our provided deadlines were quite tough. Thanks for handling this so well. Preparing the first point-release ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are already some packages known that will need an update in stable soon. Best known is the kernel, which has some annoying bugs with pending fixes. If you are aware of any important bug that is waiting in unstable and didn't make the release because of time constraints, send a mail to debian-release(a)lists.debian.org. The usual rules that were in place for freeze exceptions are also mainly valid for the first point release of the Etch life cycle. It will be possible to accept packages directly from unstable to stable-proposed-updates. If you want the stable release team to do that, wait with new uploads until you got a confirmation that the package was accepted. Also we might accept bug fixes to meet our release goal of LSB 3.1 compliance. Continuing with Lenny ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the release is before the release. We don't have too specific plans for the Lenny release cycle yet, but there are a couple of things that are already known: * Lenny should be kept in a releaseable state most of the time (with the exception of breakages caused by one of the big transitions; but we should try to keep even these as small as possible). This means that there are no excuses for not fixing an RC bug. The problems that were uncovered by piuparts runs in the past two weeks have been mostly ignored for Etch, but they need to be fixed for Lenny. These are trivial fixes, please apply them and upload soon. * Please coordinate your uploads a bit, so that the testing transition of packages stays possible. Everybody uploading new software usually makes britney cry and hinders the transition of new versions. * We will work with release blockers and release goals again for the Lenny release cycle. If you have anything that you feel belongs in one of these two categories, send a mail to -release, so that we can include it in our plans. However, we want you to remember that -release is not a discussion list. * We want to restrict the release cycle for Lenny to less than 2 years, we want to discuss experiences of Etch first though to get a more accurate time planning. We'll soon send a more in-detail information about what we think we learned from Etch, and a few more things for Lenny. We'll also try to have an Lenny-kick-off-meeting soon - we'll announce that in time as well, so that anybody can feed us with ideas. Now, we'll party and let the SRMs do the rest until Etch is out.
