Respected sir,
SUB: In protest against the inclusion of products from multinational companies
in the syllabus of 'IT @ SCHOOL'
It's a very dissappointing fact that when the whole world is moving towards
Free software, we at kerala are going behind a major MNC - Microsoft. I hereby register
my protest in such an act from 'IT @ SCHOOL' Project team.
Breaking of prototypes will definetly help us in finding economical and high quality
products for our future generation.
For students and programmers, the GNU Linux contains 'GNU Compiler Collections'
which includes C, C++, FORTRAN, PERL, TCL etc. Also, for DTP and other publishing purposes,
it includes GNU Office utilities like Abi-Word, gedit, and other worksheet utilities,
all these with a nominal cost of Rs 700-800/-. The software as it is, is free and
the cost is accounted towards the media (CD + Documentation) included.
By this letter, I urge you to take this matter seriously and suggest necessary modifications
in the action plan of 'IT @ SCHOOL' project.
Wishing you all the best and wishing all 'Students @ SCHOOL' a bright future,
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully
Manjush G. Menon.

PHOENIX
Physics with Homemade Equipments & Innovative Experiments
Phoenix is a cost effective, fast and sensitive general purpose
interface to do science experiments using a PC. The objective is to
make science experiments more interesting and meaningful by employing
methods and tools similar to the ones used in research labs. The
hardware provides Analog and Digital Input/Output channels, Signal
generators, Motor controls and Amplifiers. Parameters like velocity,
temperature etc. can be digitized and measured with microsecond timing
accuracy. The interface circuitry is packaged inside a small box with
front panel connector sockets and connected to the parallel port of
the PC.

Yesterday we had discussions about the FOSS model and its various
aspects. Tojin analysed the economic aspect and he says
---
There are so many people working in the proprietary software industry
and if there is only FOSS out there so many people are gonna lose
jobs. Now both proprietary and free software needs service and so the
effects cancels. The jobs of developers will not be there and the
economy suffers. He argues that only if the money changes hands the
country benifits. Also he thinks it is sinister about the way
GNU/Linux is distributed, he says it has made so complx that they need
to go to experts everytime.
He is not thinking about the obvious advantages. In a country like
India we cannot afford to pay a huge amount of money on softwares.
They are completely ignoring the points of technical fitness of the
software developed. They still think of the FOSS as something like
this
>> A company develops a product and give away that for free (download)
and asks how the developers get money ?
They completely ignores that FOSS is a process not a product in which
lots of people around the world and it is centered around the end
user.
Other argument is that anyway we are getting windows and linux free
(pirated in case of windows) and all things that could be done with
windows can be done with windows and there is no point in moving away
from windows.
They don't think piracy is not a problem, as long as they don't come
to you and arrest they think they are safe. It is like you don't
hesitate to steal if you are sure you won't be cought. Also they
neglect the social aspect (but the former point nullifies this).
Anyway you are ready to give it to your friend so the social aspect
doesn't matter anymore.
the discussion continues ....
Some one give me an answer to the economic aspect (the loss of jobs
and affecting the economy)
PS: You can join the discussion at LJ

Hi all,
Today there was an article in Madhyamam daily (in special page
-- I guess Kudumba madhyamam) about Sarath Lakshman and 'his' slynux
[Linux is the trade mark of Linux Torvalds --who developed the linux
kernel for the free (swathanthra) gnu syatem]. The writer's knowledge
about Free Software and Linux is very pathetic. He saya Richard Stall
man wrote Linux !!! It is a pity that he didn't go though the sites
and learned what is free software and linux. There is nothing new in
slynux (probaly malayalm fonts that knopper couldn't include). The
writer says the mounting of windows partitions has become easy. It is
easy in every other distributions too. All the features he calim for
'his' slynux is availabe with knoppix (transpond compression of 2 GB
to 700 MB). For those who are in doubt check the knoppix site
http://www.knoppix.org
GNU/Linux has grown at a very rapid rate that it has come to a level
as user friendly or even in cases more user friendly (you can install
softwares from internet with a click) and inovative (Project looking
glass, enlightenment ...)
But people don't change easily and many stick to the
windows-till-death attitude.
Knoppix has all these features and it was there for a long time.
Anyway one thing is that
I really appreciate Sarath's efforts but the media's response has been
really sickening. Of course it helped to spread the message of free
software and GNU/linux (mistakenly used as linux -- which is only one
of the many kernels available for the gnu system. It is like the
engine of a car -- though most important, useless without other
accessories). It is really a nice thing he has done, but what I'm
criticising is the media. It is not his fault that knoppix already had
all these options and nobody cared to look at it !!! I hope this
publicity (though not the right thing) will have good effect on the
masses about free softwares, especially among students.
The thing is that, when you are writing something for the public,
atleast think that some people will be out there who knows what he is
talking about. For God's sake when write about something please read
the basics !! Check the relevant sources

GNU is a movement and it is the free software philosophy that drives
us all. If you believe in it and want to help, you can consider
yourself as a GNU volunteer already. How ever getting @gnu.org or
@gnu.org.in mail-id depends on becoming an official maintainer for at
least one GNU project or how much you volunteer for the FSF
activities.
We have a huge "wanted" list at https://savannah.gnu.org/people/
Please see where you can fit in.

| i tried digging info about it on gnu.org.in/help/ ... but while
| registering a volunteer i hit a 502 ;)

I also found the link (Click Here for the old list of Volunteers)

broken. Will ask the webmaster to fix it.
BTW, Thanks for your patch, I applied it to CVS.

Hi,
Work is going on to make linux-india.org a portal for all
Linux/FLOSS-related activities in India. It contains many sections,
and you can help increase the spread of your own interests by
contributing to the site. You can publish the following kinds of
information:
1. Events.
If you are organising a Linux/FLOSS-related event in India, or know of
one being organised, please make an entry for it in the Events
Submission page
(http://linux-india.org/index.pl?id=2941&isa=Category&op=show)
You event will then be listed on the front page of the web site and get
exposure to all visitors.
I personally am trying to keep up with the event listing posted on
these mailing lists and add them myself to the Events Calendar, but I
may miss out on some events or post incorrect information. Much
better if the organisers themselves put the correct information in.
2. Jobs
If you're looking for people to work in a Linux/FLOSS related field,
take a minute to fill out the Job Submission form at
http://linux-india.org/index.pl?id=2942&isa=Category&op=show . This
will allow your job to be listed on the web site, making it easier for
people with the right kind of skills to find and respond to you.
3. News
If you're aware of any Linux/FLOSS related news in India, please
submit it on the web site at
http://linux-india.org/index.pl?id=2940&isa=Category&op=show . The
News administrator will review your posting and list it on the main
news page.
4. LUGs/FSUGs/GLUGs
Are you running or closely associated with a LUG/FSUG/GLUG? Send
lugadmin(a)linux-india.org a quick mail with the name, nickname and URL
of your LUG and we will be glad to add it to the LUG list at
http://linux-india.org/index.pl?id=2198&isa=Category&op=show .
Your LUG doesn't have a web site? No problems -- create a lug-<city>
(or fsug-city/glug-city) account for yourself and make your web site
on linux-india.org itself! Then mail your user ID to
lugadmin(a)linux-india.org to have your local web site listed in the LUG
list.
There is no charge for any of these services.
Most of the submission forms require a login, so do make an account
for yourself on the web site. It's simple, quick and I guarantee that
your login details will remain confidential, until you yourself choose
to publish them.
Feedback welcome.
Regards,
