individual glyphs of a fonts can be copyrighted

Hi all, I was browsing the web and came across this link http://www.quantenblog.net/free-software/liberation-fonts What caught my eye was this " the individual glyphs of a fonts can be copyrighted " >From what I know/understand (FWIK) if the individual glyphs are under a free license then there is possibility of having more fonts, isn't it? Has this point being raised by FSF anywhere or any writings on the same, anyone highlighting this issue.
