Can anyone advise if the the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in use in India have their firmware open for inspection.

AFAIK, the Electronic Voting Machines used in India are completely made up of hardware, and no software, firmware is used. That makes them far less prone to errors, tampering than the ones made by Diebold.
