Users can get source packages in both RPM and Debian's dpkg system.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and rpm and dpkg do have their use. Many users cannot compile or never have to bother with sources, and it suits such needs well. But today, with better hardware and software, compilation can be done reliably and quickly. Compiling directly from the sources may be the most preferred method, and if this fails or is not possible, others could be opted.
SRPMs give the sources, but then, can we not more directly distribute and use *tar or *bz2 released by major free software project teams?

The problem comes in making sure that every thing works with each other. There will be library dependencies, version mismatches and a host of other problems.
Maintaining a software distribution is a huge responsibility. It will also be a duplication of effort.

attached please find a preliminary draft of how to extend the reach of FSF-I so as to ensure that greater number of volunteers join the fold.
it is a bit hurried and slap-dash in nature, but i do await some review of the same.

I appreciate your initiative. Congratulations to all involved in this exercise. Infact, we have installed "e-Administration" - a paperless office solution for Electronics Corporation of Tamilnadu, towards their e-Governance initiative.
We would be interested in taking this up with other State Governments too. It will be based on the open source tools of Linux, Postgres and Java.
If you think we can work together for dissemination of information and knowledge, we would be delighted.
Do feel free to email me your reactions.

hi,
it seems that the draft was not such a good idea after all as a lot of side issues are being discussed. it was intended to generate some feedback so as to enhance my perspective on the processes.
i retract that particular post as of now. if and when i am able to post a much cleaner version, shall obviously do so.
warm regards sankarshan

You can start by using free software yourself. ;)
