As per our Tamil Calendar, Pongal, the festival of harvest, when the sun is thanked, falls on Jan 15, 2004. It is remarkable that RMS, the Sun who heralded the Free Software movement will be visiting India at about the same time. The Sun shines on its own, and is the source of all life and energy. We all have more reasons to celebrate the harvest season the forthcoming month of Thai, and the popular tamil proverb goes "Thai piranthal vazhi pirakkum" - Thai is the harbinger of good tidings. We can hope that the visit of RMS to India, and the WSF meet will make a difference in all our lives.
I am sure the FSF would have its prorammes and plans for the visit, but I would like to stress, that there should be more focus on presenting RMS and the activities of the FSF, to the media and to the public, so that there is a wider awarness about the value of the free software movement, that is being grossly unutilised in India. Newspapers have given excellent coverage in the past - I still remember an article by Satish Babu in the Hindu that was titled something like nothing is more appropriate for India, some two years ago. There was another article about the free software option last month in our papers.
There should be a good built of an electrifying excitement over the visit of the chief guru of free software. I never knew that RMS had visited Chennai twice in the past, until recently. Even with my own limited knowledge, I know that RMS has travelled widely in India addressing the student community in several Indian Universities and colleges, and has visited culturally significant spots like, Mahabalipuram. RMS wrote that Belur-Halibedu took his breath away. There are several interesting facets of RMS that would connect him well with the common public of India, and it is high time that we make optimum use of his visit to promote use of free software as extensively as possible.
hi list,
raman, indeed rms is the source of all life and energy of all of us(not for OSS folks,i guess ;-p ).
I was reading about this two chaps in LUG of Iraq, those guys need support, encouragement from all of us.I wish rms give his blessing too.

arky, really, this is what the OSS folks have to say about free software (osi-:)
"The Open Source Initiative is a marketing program for free software. It's a pitch for "free software" on solid pragmatic grounds rather .."
The Open Source Case for Hackers argues:
"Mainstream corporate CEOs and CTOs will never buy "free software." But if we take the very same tradition, the same people, and the same free-software licenses and change the label to "open source" - that, they'll buy"
We can take their superficial attitude towards Free Software with a pinch of salt. More was discussed about the OSI forking in the November postings to fsf-friends.
I was reading about this two chaps in LUG of Iraq, those guys need support, encouragement from all of us.I wish rms give his blessing too.
That was interesting. I remember having seen a Pakistan linux user group site www.linuxpakistan.net that used the expression "Powered by Free Software", along with the gnu logo, in their web site so naturally and appropriately, that it surprised me. Many people here have great difficulties and reservations in using the expression Free Software, that ought to change. While we are fencing our border at the cost of 11,000 crores, we are also sending out a delegation of lawyers to Pakistan on a good-will mission. I am a great fan of AR Rahman, and in his Vande Mataram album, there is this song: <quote> What are you waiting for? Another day? Another time? Some day we have find a new way to peace ... </quote> that was sung by the great Pakistani singer of all times: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, to the tune of "porale ponnu thayee.." that was already a good hit in a Tamil Movie. I thought that music connected people well. Free Software is doing the same. If States can find the real links that connect people in heart and soul, we may save a lot of resources for more constructive purposes. Free Software is connecting people in a real, purposeful and wholesome way, bringing in spectacular changes.
Raman,
Yes,I heard the song too,it was in a album "Guru's of peace".Software like music is not limited to physical, political and geographical borders, its formless.
FSF should connect people in heart and souls.

See www.gnu.org/gnu/fs-user-groups.html
It is actually http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-user-groups.html
Even www.linuxpakistan.net is a LUG, still their site so clearly says:
+----------------------------------+ | | | Powered by Free Software | +----------------------------------+
along with the GNU Logo.
But, that is first time I ever saw a site use the expression "Powered by Free Software"
The expression could be more widely used. I wonder what RMS would say on this.
Many sites run with free software including Linux, Apache, PostgreSQL, Mailman, Bind etc. and it is most appropriate that such a sites says "Powered by Free Software".
Free Software means and includes the Freedom along with the free software [note capitalization].
As and when users, entities, organisations and nations adopt Free Software, they could splash on the their index.html page "Powered by Free Software".
Once this happens, it is not long before which the groups will call them Free Software User Groups.
But, that is first time I ever saw a site use the expression "Powered by Free Software"
It is a good thing to boost awareness of free software. However, that expression has more than one possible meaning. It could mean that *all* the software running the server is free, or it could mean that only *some* of the software running the server is free. One cannot tell which.
We should encourage people to say things which are unambiguous about this.

I hope this means:
If a server used *only* free software, then they could say, "Powered by Free Software". Otherwise, they cannot in a general way covering all the free software they use, say "Powered by Free Software".
The others who use only *some* free software may never use "Powered by Free Software", because it would be ambigiously, and such users may have to say which of its software are free, and which are not free, using different expressions, to give the correct meaning.
I hope this means:
If a server used *only* free software, then they could say, "Powered by Free Software". Otherwise, they cannot in a general way covering all the free software they use, say "Powered by Free Software".
I don't have confidence that others will reason in this way. So let's urge people to make their statements unambiguous.

Someone has already asked for the itinerary of RMS and I am sure Arun would post it when ready. Please note that I only wrote about the spirit that prevails in India at that time of the year. For a long time, I thought that pongal in Pongal was just what we eat after the rice is cooked with milk and jaggery in a new pot until it overflows and offered to the sun along with sugarcane. Please read what Chantal Boulanger & Tom Dawber had to say about the Pongal, in their book titled "In the Kingdom of Nataraja":
<quote> ... their belief impregnate every part of their lives and come from the depths of their being and history. Pongal, the most popular Dravidian ritual, is a "boiling-over", a symbol of life and fertility, and a way to thank the divine energy which swallowed their ancestors for millennia. Here the pot contains the Energy, it means the over-flowing plenitude rather than the void." </quote>
The day before Pongal, we have Bhogi, when, by tradition, all unwanted pots are broken up, and used clothing and others are burned up, to pave way for the new pots and things. Life is seen as a continuous renewal.
What better occasion could there be for doing away with proprietary licences, that could be given a disposal at the time of Bhogi! RMS in this free sofware song has sung:
<quote> [To the melody of Sadi Moma]
Join us now and share the software; You'll be free, hackers, you'll be free. /x2/
Hoarders may get piles of money, That is true, hackers, that is true. But they cannot help their neighbors; That's not good, hackers, that's not good.
When we have enough free software At our call, hackers, at our call, We'll throw out those dirty licenses Ever more, hackers, ever more.
Join us now and share the software; You'll be free, hackers, you'll be free. /x2/

I give here a page by Vikram Aggarwal covering the visit of RMS to Mumbai, that really shows how RMS utilises every second available.
