Hi,
Has anyone used an AirTel Data Card on Ubuntu to access the internet? Any tips on how to do this?
I haven't bought the card yet. I just wanna make sure it works before i buy it.
Just in case this is helpful : I am using ubuntu edgy on a sony vaio vgn-fe48g.

You will need to contact your dealer and ask him which (brand / make / chipset) cards are available (if at allyou have have a choice) and then go and google.

ok.. will do that... but i dont seem to find anything on GNU/Linux and datacards in general. do ppl actually use these things?

WiFi works perfectly out of the box. i'm using bluetooth with gnome-bluetooth. perfect out of the box. havent tried using the modem yet but its detected in networking. only things not working are the Fn keys (can be fixed by patching the kernel, taken care of in fiesty), the camera (there is a driver for this but is not stable) and the sony memory stick slot (no solution for this yet) alsa needs to be compiled from source for the headphone and mic to work. speakers work out of the box. on the whole good compatibility.. so i've completely shifted to linux..

The Huawei EC321 Datacard works perfectly with GNU/Linux. Both reliance and tata Indicom have this card. I'm not sure about Airtel.

*chop * I've used the Reliance cards (the HUAWEI one) the ZTE one I haven't tried. They work ok.

Reliance has discontinued the Huawei PCMCIA card. It only has ZTE, which does *not* work with Linux. I burnt my hands on this. Reliance however still has a Huawei USB external modem, which might work.
But whatever you do, do *not* take ZTE under any circumstances as this Chinese manufacturer doesn't care a hoot about Linux compatibility or standards. The chip used inside ZTE cards have some issues that even kernel developers haven't been able to work with yet. I remember a mail thread between the professor who was associated with Reliance's Linux clients in the early years, trying to work with the kernel guy who had worked on the chips that ZTE uses. The discussion reached nowhere because the ZTE version of the chip worked weirdly.
