where will it go and instal?
Depends on what xxxxx is. Usually software gets
installed in /usr/bin, /usr/sbin. If its a library it
can get installed in /usr/lib.
How to find the location of installation?
Just do a whereis on the package name.
whereis lspci
Can we choose it on our own?
Yes. Its usually done only when you are compiling from
sources, and when you are testing a particular version
release of a software. Some packages are dependencies
for other packages. You don't want to disturb the
package management build of your distro.
Moreover, when you have auto-installer tools like yum,
apt-get, emerge, YaST, its much easier to install
software using them than doing it manually.
