Hello GNUHeads,
I just saw a program (samakalikam) in Kairali TV. They were showing Sharat Lakshman and his newly developed OS "SLYNUX". I hope you all also read this mail.. Sharat.
We had lot of discussions on this topic some months back. At last Sharat himself told us that he just remastered knoppix (http://mm.gnu.org.in/pipermail/fsf-friends/2005-January/002756.html). But right from the news in Hindu, he claims that he build an OS based on linux and it is user-friendly like Windows. This is making false impression in majority of public (who are non-IT people).
In TV program he was telling that he renamed xmms to linamp and gaim to slynux messenger so that people who come from windows world understand easily. Does these products allow to change their name like this. Also names like My computer, My documents are trademark of Microsoft, IAC. He uses these terms to make SLYNUX mimic like windows. These are trademark infringement. His new site www.slynux.co.nr has proofs (screenshots) to support this.
He now invite the community to join the slynux development. This can put others also in danger.
What is your goal, sharat ? If you want to advocate the advantage of FS, this is not a good way, IMO. Hackers from different part of the world work hard to achieve this goal, join them. See distros like Mandrake, Fedora, Ubuntu ...
Just renaming the efforts of those hackers and gaining cheap popularity is bad. May be you are too young to understand this. Atleast your parents (or the people who support you) should understand this. You are really insulting the hackers who build knoppix and other GNU tools bundled with it.
If you are a real hacker, join with savannah or similar group of hackers.

Hello sir,
I'm extremely sorry. I was stopped every works with SLYNUX last month. And was concentrating in my studies. But I just made the SLYNUX download avaliable. I didn't expect any responds about that. But more than 1300 people downloaded SLYNUX and got many appreciative comments.
From there I came back with SLYNUX. From these
insipiring e-mails I got, Many people suggested that SLYNUX need a community forum and such things. So I tried and created some stuffs - Forum. Many people joined there..
Actually I'm not going to work with next SLYNUX versions. I have only one idea behind this community - If anyone wants to do some developments with SLYNUX, help them. That's all.
SLYNUX was a Small project of me. I created that. Now I 'm concentrating in studies and not with SLYNUX Community. SLYNUX Community forum is just a platform where people can discuss anything about slynux or do any works...
One day, kairali came to my house with any notification and took that story. I also told them that I have never developed and operating system. I developed a modified version of knoppix distro. But the problem is most of the reporters don't know about Operating systems and Computers stuffs.
I will join savannah or other good projects later. But this is not the time for that. This is the time to concentrate on education. I'm leaving SLYNUX.
Thanking You

Hmm., basically I dont think he himself has a clue about a OS/kernel/* Neither does he have any idea about Licenses/Copyrights/* So., I dont think we can actually blame him with anything. Its just unfortunate that the people supporting him in his activities dont realize these things either.

Exactly.. The scenario is such that the most people away from the s/w industry take software for granted, without considering the license... When a non-industrial Indian installs software , they just press "next" when the License page is displayed.. Just as their hardware vendor or the next door "computer guru" had taught them. And for those do(may be if they have nothing else to read and bored ;-) ) they dont care because for most of them avoiding taxes and law is a matter of business and pride. It is a small percentage of "educated" population who care about education. As such people are more have flooded, and communication between really ethical people, with thirst for knowledge Always gets either poisoned or blocked by the other "majority", .As such even for a person who is very ethical who prays to God, you can find him using Pirated Software with all the good glory going on in his mind with the ignorance of Licensing.. You can find educational institution being opened up by lighhting a Lamp in front of the Lord, providing IT education, on Pirated Software. In such a place where people are ignorant that ethics also apply very much to "new technology", you can find plenty of such mistakes like that of Sarath.
In a different angle , There are these so called "Computer People" and "Computer scientists" , upon whom other people used to look as Gods. Their word was always final. These software people or in newer terms "hardware vendors", when questioned about the dialog they used to get about the license, just used to say"just ignore it .. press next". Their words wew final. They were bound to press next. And for the hardware vendors, they too were affected with the pride of avoiding the law. It used to (and still does) gives them the feling "the law doesnt apply to me. i am the King" they dont realise themselves as part of the community. And for those few who did, were crushed by the business of those who didnt.
Sory for getting carried away from the topic a little. There was a stack overflow in my emotions module.

Most of the reporters are clueless about computers, and come to interview Sarath just because it makes a "good" news item. I dont think they have any interest presenting the issue well.
If anybody wants to understand the media, please watch/read Manufacturing Consent. http://chomskytorrents.org/TorrentDetails.php?TorrentID=32 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375714499/qid=1119972544/sr=8...
As for trademark infringement, please cut Sarath some slack. Do we want to live in permission culture or in free culture? http://www.free-culture.cc/
Regarding renaming xmms to linamp, again do we want to take permission from the powers that be every time? Is it a world worth striving for? living in?
I think Sarath has all the rights to do what he has done.
And regarding the nonsense of piracy, please read http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html#Piracy

I strongly second that. Just check out Linspire and see how many things they have just renamed!
I think Sarath has all the rights to do what he has done.
I can say though he has done some wrong, in his particular case at least, we should have all the humanity in us to identify his true intent, softly point his mistakes, and encourage him in the right direction.

Geez! never occured to me.. nice revealing fact! ( I also just heard the same thing on what my friends presented me and called "RMS Video". I guess they meant "The GNU Philosophy Video" by Richard M Stallman)

Renaming, though freedom may exists is not good. By renaming we are trying to take away the credit from the orginal developers.
If this logic is to be accepted then, FSF should not object to GNU/Linux being called Linux or whatever else.
Should the Free Sofware be just copies of Popular proprietory tools, that too in names? Why can't we exist on our own, with our own names?

What I would better suggest is that Once you rename, you should mention right on the splash screen and in "about", the original name of the project and a small line stating the intent of renaming. Howzthat?
