I came across this project on Slashdot. The Remote IT Village Project attempting to connect several isolated villages deep in the Laotian Jungle to the rest of the world using wireless networks, pedal-power and Laonux (customized Linux installs translated into the Laotian language). Power surges can be a hassle when the nearest computer store is hundreds of miles away, but they're shooting for a May 18th "go live" date." http://www.jhai.org/jhai_remoteIT.html
The conditions are almost(or exactly) like the Indian villages, so I thought to bring this to everyones notice. Please spread the word and if someone can whisper a word about this to our GREAT INDIAN BUREAUCRACY, it would be nice.

another person whom we can ask is Sudhakar chandrasekaran (aka "thaths") who has been doing _exactly_ the same thing in some other african country (is it namibia?). I haven't spoken ever to thaths. and I dont know if he is still doing this but I'm sure he has the knowhow to do bicycle powered laptops, etc.,.

I think this project has more potential than the simputer project. A second hand computer can be bought easily for less than 10,000/- in the Nehru Place at Delhi and that can easily serve the need for at least three students and do a little extra work too.
Hello Raj,
Early last month as part of media lab our team had worked towards interconnecting certain villages in rural karnataka.
Amir hussain, the Principal Researcher of Daknet is leaving for MIT very soon. He may be of assistance in helping anyone setup-deploy-manage these networks linking these remote villages with the mainstream population through 802.11x.
Write in to Amir/me and i will do my best to guide you to the right resource.
Bye for now and have a nice day Raj.
