Actually, it is the Debian version of GNU/Linux (and it says so when it starts up). It started out as the GNU operating system, with Linux, Torvalds' kernel, filling the last gap.

I started developing the GNU operating system 20 years ago plus two weeks. I'm here in Mumbai now, and will give a speech about free software and GNU tomorrow afternoon at 1pm in room A5. I will be in the WSF media center this afternoon starting around 5pm.
