Dear Friends,
I got so many appreciative and some opposive mails about My SLYNUX ( Remaster of knoppix). Among them, I got some mails from FSF people. They claimed that There is nothing new in SLYNUX when compared to knoppix . Partially I also agree with the statement. But everyone should understand the reason and themes behind SLYNUX.Its target is not new markets..like MS.
I never claimed that I have made an OS. Actually, the thing behind SLYNUX is: I am very much interested in GNU/Linux. It was my first experience before 1 year I tried out Redhat 7 for the first time. I myself installed itthen I was a windows user. First of all My attraction was captured on its GUI. I felt it was nice. I didnt know any shell comments or other functions in Gnu/Linux that time. My only tool was mouse pointerlike windows I used it. At that time I thought that all windows program can b executed in Linux. Also thought that Fat32 FS will not work in GNU/Linux. After 2 days I tried to remove Redhat..because I disappointed abt that I cant use Linux for my use. There was no mp3 support and no video player in it. So I left Linux OS. I removed the installed boot loader (GRUB) by over writing it with re-installing windows. This experienceresulted me in search of a user friendly Linux. At that time I didnt have an internet connection. So there were limitations for collecting knowledge about Linux.
One of the FSF friends reviewed about www.slcreations.g3z.com (U will get this link from www.slynux.co.nr) that the content in that site is invalid and foolish. Actually that site was created by me when I was in 8th Standardwhen I was a newbie in Computer field. (I was wanted to know how websites are created. So using some templates I created the website and wrote funny and foolish things in that site. Some sentences. like SL e- Periodic table came in to the market.) I have developed a software called E Periodic TableBut it was freeware and never came to the market..At the time I created this html page..I didnt know what is FSF and didnt heard about it.
In my locality (Mahe; Near Tellicherry) No one used Linux and any one didnt know something about Linux or FS in my knowledge. Some of them heard about Linux. Thats all. Some of the computer shops had Redhat. And they thought that there is only one Linux Redhat. Before 11 months I got Knoppix 3.1 from a man studying in engg college (In Yanam). I became much interested in knoppix and tried out. I gave copies of knoppix to my friends. They used it for 5 or 6 days and said What Linux? Even we cant use it friendly..No one didnt understand the program names.
I gave awareness to my friends about Linux. They became bored about hearing my philosophy. After getting internet connection, I came to know more about Linux and Knoppix. I decided to make a user favourable Remaster of Knoppix with a lot of features. I tried to learn shell commands.. For creating SLYNUX, I had spent most of night ( about to 3.30 A.M) for months for getting my effort to a success. In some days of a little bit successI had jumped with glad.
Advanced users of Linux will not understand the problems faced by common windows users who tried out Linux and disappointed.Because they have a wide possibility of getting info abt Linux ( Through LUGs, FSF community etc). But common users are left non-techy..and they will not spend the time for experimentation in Linux to learn it. I know it from experience (especially People in Mahe). I am sure that more and more people can switch to Linux easily using SLYNUX. ( I recommend SLYNUX only for beginners). Common People can also install SLYNUX easily through some clicks
I have now lots of ideas to make SLYNUX more and more user friendlyI have some ideas to develop a distro from scratch independly from knoppix..(using a different compression method) as someone commented that SLYNUX cannot be considered as a distro)
I have only a 14.4 kbps internet.(phone bills..r not affordable now a days)
I have some plans to create an LUG in Mahe. Hope that FSF will help me.. I request FSF friends to continue sending opinions about SYNUX or give advices to make it better.. What Changes I have to make in SLYNUX Website? (www.slynux.co.nr) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Im now studying 10th Standard (SCERT syllabus). After my Exams I could spend more time on Linux.

Dear Sarath,
What you have done is certainly noteworthy. It is not everyday that one finds a school student remastering a CD, or even familiarising with a new OS by him(her)self. Don't feel concerned about negative criticism. Only those who do something will be criticised.
But, for now, concentrate on your coming examination.
Best of luck.

thanks for the clarifying all the hoopla around ur distro. indeed it is a good distro when taken in the context that it is by a teenager that too deprived by a cool net connection.
but i wud still advice you not to reinvent the wheel.
desktop linux has bcum way easier than even ur distro, so here is a job for you which I hope you would take up >> Instead of improving the distro you already have, get the latest version of Knoppix and then edit/morph/remaster that.
And yes beware that it might not be legal to carry flash plugins and stuff.... have u taken permission ???

hello, first of all, i dont have time and intention to write an essay here. the non-user-friendliness which you people are talking about, is more or less an inherent attribute of posix systems, which ritchie has stipulated as "the design of unix is simple, but one needs some intelligence to appreciate its elegance". so the only way to appreciate _user-friendliness_ of gnu/* ( let me call it as gnu) is to work with it. and there is no easy way for it. and for shortcut finders, i havent heard of any illiterate been taught hindi with its script made simple. And if you throw away or hide the ways of pure old hacking, then its a denial of freedom, freedom to hack !. cheers, amal

Hello Sarath,
Best wishes for your examinations !! Concentrate on that now.
It is not because people don't want mp3 players or flash players with thier distro, like Ankit already told, did you take permission to use flash ? or mp3 decoder with your distro ? it is not free software and they can sue you for that (I'm not threatening you but THEY CAN). User friendlyness or convenience cannot be at the cost of freedom. Why they should go for a linux (to be precice gnu/linux) that is like Windows when already they have windowos (illegal copy -- even your flash and mp3 decoders are illegal-- ). It is not that people never tried to make it like windows, there is linspire (lindows before) the xpde desktop that is windows like. I don't think you can change the name linux to slynux without making more than 85% change in its kernel. Well it can be SL GNU/linux. When you are using GNU as your first ever OS no question arise of familiarity of applications of wallpaper or so. When students learn to use computers starte using GNU the question of being windows like is null. So the currrent IT at school is a very important step towards it.
Suppose we have made the system user friendly like windows with flash, java skype and what not propriety softwares and a whole lotta people use it and it becomes popular. What is the use ? If they get a more user friendly OS, say Mac of Apple they will surely go for it, if the only thing is user friendliness. I'm not telling that user friendliness does not matter. It does matter but freedom is more important.
FREEDOM IS IMPORTANT THAN CONVENIENCE ( Once you have freedom you think of convenience)
GNU has grown to be on the desktop[Except may be for some specific applications].
So Sarath well you go on with your ideas if youthink it is what is to be done. [What is the use when all the people use so called linux without realising the importance of freedom]
So I hope you'll with me to hack on the phoenix project and python translation. I think it will be more useful if you join INDLINUX project. [If you keep that name slynux, well no body might want to be with you :-) hey just kidding. ] Now what we need is lot of free applications. Instead of going for mp3 we should try to include ogg as far as possible [Though xmms is free software mp3 decoder is patended and to use the decoder for business applications is illegal]
Happy hacking
With love Praveen PS: Don't hesitate to mail me for anything that I can do. I'm trying hard to get your distro mirrored here. We hope to put up a debian mirror here soon Don't think I'm just criticizing you, these are some things most people think

I dont think anyone's been rude to Sarath as yet @ FSF, have they??? The only thing that got on ppl's nerve was the fact that he wanted to 'sell' his stuff... [check out the archives] and you will know. But then, that is pretty natural..... !
Anyways best of luck sarath, you have the brains @ coding and stuff, just choose the right path and hey you will be of gr8 service to loads of ppl.

hello, i agree with ankit. choose the right path and do things, let the code speak for you. docing and publicizing, give it to others. anybody heard of Xavier Leroy, the theory guy, who is tied up with programing language pragmatics, wrote the entire Linux Pthread lib (single handedly), an essential lib next to glibc. he did his job, went back to his guild. thats the way real men work !!. hats off to Xavier Leroy. regards, amal

what does top posting mean?
err... btw regarding that 13thingie, actually GMAIL lists all the emails and its replies in the form of a conversation. so the conversation starts from 1 to 2 and so on.. so that conversation was the 13th one and that sounds unlucky ;-) so i posted a blank thread to make the no. of conversations to 14.
sounds superstitous? sure it does!
:D
cheers

Nah. Just stupid. Not everyone on this list uses gmail; and not every one knows that that was the 13th message.
Btw. this is bottom posting, and the proper way of replying to e-mail posts.

So???
GPL and every singly Free license allow people to sell Free software. Of course, Copyleft licenses like the GPL impose certain burdens on people making money off Free Software, but that is a different story altogether.
I am not speaking for the list, or anybody else here, but I was concerned by /apparent/ refusal to give due credit to GNU, Knoppix, and other projects. Once it was shown that it was only a communication gap, and as his later mails show, he now has a good picture of the philosophical angle.
oh yeah of course.... btw let us end this thread and let sleeping dogs lie! Let us start from the start :)

for the first time. I myself installed it?then I was a windows user.
You mean that you were using Microsoft Windows, don't you?? Please recall that knoppix, and AFAIK, SLYLINUX have windowing systems, which display Windows on the screen.
Sarath, it is a very bad, bad world out there. Please be very, very accurate in use of terminology. It is very, very, very important.
First of all ? My attraction was captured on it?s GUI. I felt it was nice. I didn?t know any shell comments or other functions in Gnu/Linux that time. My only tool was mouse pointer?like windows I used it.
(big snip)
my friends. They used it for 5 or 6 days and said ??What Linux? Even we can?t use it friendly..No one didn?t understand the program names.?
Ah. You and your friends came to opposing conclusions about the same interface? That is natural. `User friendliness' is a matter of personal taste.
I decided to make a user favourable Remaster of Knoppix with a lot of features.
Certainly you are welcome. But, please do join some of the live CD projects. Tell them what changes you made to the Knoppix CD.
commands?.. For creating SLYNUX, I had spent most of night ( about to 3.30 A.M) for months for getting my effort to a success?.In some days of a little bit success?I had jumped with glad.
? Advanced users of Linux will not understand the problems faced by common windows users who tried out Linux and disappointed?.Because they have a wide possibility of getting info abt Linux ( Through LUGs, FSF community etc).
Eeek!!!! Every body, including you (and of course me) started the same, hard way. Long sleepless nights, hard work, several installs, reinstalls, system crashes, misconfigurations, etc. I do believe that advanced users, *and* programmers do understand ordinary users' problems.
I have some plans to create an LUG in Mahe. Hope that FSF will help me..
Have a look at http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-user-groups.html
Also, see http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO.html, and in particular, http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/User-Group-HOWTO-7.html#ss7.3
I?m now studying 10th Standard (SCERT syllabus)?.After my Exams I could spend more time on Linux.
Heavens, my dear!!! It is March, and your exams are toward end of this month, no??? Please do complete that.
Hello Sarath, You can be proud of the work done regardless of it's profile. I have been reading all the postings with regards to SLYNUX. It's never a small job to customize a distro. A complete user-friendly GNU/Linux is our aim too. We are also working on similar projects. However don't be disappointed on the negative comments by the (some) FSF people, because they don't know to appreciate a work or a person.
I havn't worked with your distro yet, but have some suggestions. Instead of promoting proprietary formats like MPEG, MP3 etc..., you may use OGG Tarkin, OGG Vorbis, OGG Theora etc... These all are multimedia file formats which comes under Free Software. Give complete support to Free formats and promote .
But for the time-being, you may concentrate on your forthcoming exams and perform well. I think you will be getting a long vacation after the exams. So there is plenty of time coming for your FS experiments. GOOD LUCK
regards Manilal

Dear Friends,
I got so many appreciative and some opposive mails about My SLYNUX ( Remaster of knoppix). Among them, I got some mails from FSF people. They claimed that There is nothing new in SLYNUX when compared to knoppix . Partially I also agree with the statement .But everyone should understand the reason and themes behind SLYNUX .Its target is not new markets..like MS.
I never claimed that I have made an OS. Actually, the thing behind SLYNUX is: I am very much interested in GNU/Linux. It was my first experience before 1 year I tried out Redhat 7 for the first time. I myself installed it then I was a windows user. First of all My attraction was captured on its GUI. I felt it was nice. I didnt know any shell comments or other functions in Gnu/Linux that time. My only tool was mouse pointer like windows I used it. This experience resulted me in search of a user friendly Linux. At that time I didnt have an internet connection. So there were limitations for collecting knowledge about Linux.
One of the FSF friends reviewed about www.slcreations.g3z.com (U will get this link from www.slynux.co.nr) that the content in that site is invalid and foolish. Actually that site was created by me when I was in 8th Standard when I was a newbie in Computer field. (I was wanted to know how websites are created. So using some templates I created the website and wrote funny and foolish things in that site. Some sentences. like SL e- Periodic table came in to the market.) I have developed a software called E Periodic Table But it was freeware and never came to the market..At the time I created this html page..I didnt know what is FSF and didnt heard about it.
I gave awareness to my friends about
Linux .They became bored about hearing my philosophy. After getting internet connection, I came to know more about Linux and Knoppix. I decided to make a user favourable Remaster of Knoppix with a lot of features. I tried to learn shell commands .. For creating SLYNUX, I had spent most of night ( about to 3.30 A.M) for months for getting my effort to a success .In some days of a little bit success I had jumped with glad.
Advanced users of Linux will not understand the problems faced by common windows users who tried out Linux and disappointed .Because they have a wide possibility of getting info abt Linux ( Through LUGs, FSF community etc).
I have now lots of ideas to make SLYNUX more and more user friendly I have some ideas to develop a distro from scratch independly from knoppix..(using a different compression method) as someone commented that SLYNUX cannot be considered as a distro)
I have only a 14.4 kbps internet .(phone bills..r not affordable now a days)
I have some plans to create an LUG in Mahe. Hope that FSF will help me.. I request FSF friends to continue sending opinions about SYNUX or give advices to make it better.. What Changes I have to make in SLYNUX Website? (www.slynux.co.nr)
Im now studying 10th Standard (SCERT syllabus) .After my Exams I could spend more time on Linux.
---------------MY ULTIMATE AIM IS TO FAMILIARISE GNU/LINUX---------------------------
