Dear Praveen,
It is pointless for us to go into all the claims made there about some new "Operating System". Debian and Knoppix have made the task of creating new distros so easy, that we may get to read about new born babies creating new distros by kicking on keyboards with their tender feet :)
The www.slynux.co.nr site says this
<quote> We provide you the best customer service as we can. This is a free software provider. We give you different and different software. We release software per month. The latest software we released is SL E- PeriodicTable.(See products). Our slogan is technology changes day by day. So the software will become free software. You should write to me about our site and products. You can freely install demo version of the software from downloads. After installing you will get serial number from the author, SarathLakshman by a request e-mail. </quote>
When I tried to clip the above quote, a stern javascrip alert said I could not even view source code of the html page! That is obviously cripple ware distributed without source code, and certainly not free software. Ten year olds or 10th standard kids may get away with all this as part of learning or having fun, but it is not the kind of example we could cite or recommend.
It only proves again that we need a curriculum at schools that explains the free software philosophy in a manner the students can understand, so that they become responsible users, and if possible, make sensible contributions to the community.
Regards, Ramanraj.

If he had studied in a government school, or had seen the IT text books for SSLC, he would have understood what free software is. I understand that he is in a CBSE school. We need to put pressure on CBSE to bring free software into their IT education.

Sharat Lakshman contacted me yesterday. While talking to him, he said he just modified the Knoppix distro to make slynux. He have renamed lot of other packages also and given new interface.
He never wished, to claim that, he build a new OS (or distro). The non-techy press reporter understood in that way. Poor boy just wished, let his work get some publicity. That's all.
It is really good work in one way. That is a 15 year boy could do some good work using a GNU/Linux distro. He wish other students get inspired from his work, thus the GNU/Linux usage in schools may improve. (In Kerala, in many schools, teachers skip the GNU/Linux portion of syllabus saying that is not much important. This is because, the teachers are not trained/aware of this OS)
We should give all support to this boy, understand him the concepts of freedom, so that he can contribute more for the Free Software World.

I would support that. Hindu reporter might have misunderstood what was being said, I would be very surprised if Hindu understands Free(dom) Software fully, I think a lot of the errors came from Hindu.

Invite him to join our list, that will help him nurture the culture of swatantra software.
Sarath, please join our list and be part of the on going movemnt. Congratulations on your hacking endeavour. Please understand that free software companies do have to follow the rules of the game. You will be able to understand them better by being with the community.

No such problem for me. Ramanraj, here is what you were looking for:-
[begin quote]

I have re-wraped and mangled that a bit, adding The `***'s.
Now that a `mere student'(*) can `create' an OS, the IT@school authorities can no longer complain that no trained / qualified / knowledgeable hands to maintain school computers.
(*) No disrepect meant to Sarath or his efforts. Sarath, (in Bcc:) though I do not have the CD, the site is well done, please visit http://indlinux.org, and consider helping them, instead of duplicating your efforts.

That is certainly not what I was looking for, but here is what I am looking forward to now:-
FSF India may look out for ways to nurture talent, and I propose we create FSF India Awards for School Children, to be annually awarded to students who have contributed to the free software movement by writing articles, developing innovative free software programs or for having made any other commendable contribution.

sarath, this statement is fundamentally flawed. as you know linux is copy righted to linus torvalds, so `my linux` doesnt make sense. if you want to mean your linux distro, you should rather use your gnu/linux distro. fsf's mission is not to advertise for linux kernel. it has got a more dignified goal. please see http://www.gnu.org

as far as i think contemplating the philosophy should be given much more importance than developing for gnu. and that should be given importance. otherwise it can lead to discrepancies within the organization (open source is the biggest example). so organizing some essay contest will be helpful, rather than scholarships and endowments. i think we should correct the hindu reporter.

Yes this is a nice suggestion. We should give FSF India Awards for
1. Best Programmer 2. Best Document Writer
etc.
