Hello everybody, I wish to share with you a news snippet. The New Indian Express had declared RedHat Linux as a Proprietary software. Ref: http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20031223001556&Page=R&...
It is said in the EULA of RedHat Linux that "Most of the Linux Programs are licensed pursuant to an open source EULA that permits you to copy, modify, and redistribute the software, in both source code and binary code forms."
But Indian Express had declared, quoting some official sources that RedHat is a proprietary software. It's said in the RedHat license that anybody can copy RedHat Linux for non-commercial purposes.
The AKSHAYA Project which is a community literacy programme is a non-commercial initiative by the govt of Kerala. I just can't understand the motto behind such a report. The newspaper is trying to make AKSHAYA project a commercial initiative. Forgetting the matter that This project will make a good impact of "Free Software" on the mass the newspaper is trying to benefit some vested persons. with regards Manilal

Its true that redhat is partly proprietary. Since its partly proprietary (_and_ if you wanted to take a hard stand), you can call it proprietary (just because there is a small piece of meat in my food, it does not just become partly non-vegetarian ;) )

Maybe AKSHAYA should think of some other alternatives? (like debian, for example?)

I suspect that this is a case of trademark infringement. Has anybody seen the CDs??
Myself and Sajith had told officials in IT Mission and CDIT possible issues involved in distributing RedHat CDs. May be they chose to ignore the issue.
CD package made for Akshya looked like RedHat marketing stuff. I dont think state should take up RedHat's marketing job.

I think that State should not have infringed Redhat's trademark. I think that the State should not be given free (of cost) advice for trademark infringements. This is the job of their Legal Dept. and not of FS activists. Our job is to spread the message of software sharing and help as outlined in the GNU Project.
The AKSHAYA Project which is a community literacy programme is a non-commercial initiative
As per the guildlines given by redhat through following page, there is no trademark infringement happened in CDIT's attempt to redistribute redhat CDs with their logo for Akshaya Project.

The real players behind attempt to topple the use of free software for Akshaya project should be exposed.
