Do we really require a regional language translation for this. To my opinion, its more important to convey the meaning of free or freedom in FSF's context to the people. Also adapting the english usage of free software to regional languages as such would give us an edge as we will have a common notation irrespective of the languages, which will make things more easier. This is my personal feeling as I don't have idea of the technicality of languages, and I feel adapting a word from another language will not do any harm, instead its one way enriching the language. ( Oxford dictionary now contains quite a lot of indian language words like guru).

I am not tamil speaking, but am familiar with it. `Viduthalai' reminds me me of `independence' and 'liberation'. The concept of freedom is better conveyed by the term 'swatantrayam', whatever way you spell it.
In Malayalam we can call Free Software as "Swatantra Ganana Soothram". What do other Malayalees in this list say ?

Its better to have a regional translation in IMHO. The word "Free" has made a lot of confusions. To express the idea of "Free" in Free software to non-english speaking mass, we need local terms. Else we have to correct people each and every time or ask them to visit www.gnu.org.
PS: IAC, majority of Indians don't know English.
