Live streaming http://www.ustream.tv/channel/virtual-global-conference-on-blended-and-dist… In a world where students have access to technology, there is increasing need to incorporate systems wherein the focus is on the learner than the teacher. Technology has a huge role to play in this paradigm shift. In order that the teachers as facilitators grasp the huge untapped potential of technology, TQMS is organizing a virtual global conference in educational technology titled “Technology for Blended and Distributed Education” from August 18-20, 2010 wherein the speakers address the participants over virtual mode through video conferencing and webinars. The objective is manifold to tap the potential of technology, to bring world renowned and distinguished speakers in specialized domains in ICT advancements in education and address emerging concepts, technology based administrative deployment practices, strategies and possibilities to share their experiences with a select audience from their home location from any part of the world. The sessions would be scheduled to take into consideration the various location of speakers from different time zones. While participants of the conference will assemble at Christ University, the venue for conference proceedings, the robustness of the conference will also be built around high quality peer reviewed papers for a few face to face presentation as ‘interlude conference plug-in sessions’ at the physical location of the conference on all the days of the conference. National Conference on Free Software and Education

FSF India, SPACE and the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, Kerala, is organising a National Conference on Free Software and Education at Kozhikode (formerly Calicut) during September 10-12. Faculty members from some of the eminent institutes in India and abroad will speak on the need for using Free Software in education and demonstrate Free Software useful for science and engineering education. The inaugural session would be on 10th evening at the Tagore Centenary Hall, Kozhikode, and the main conference at the NIT campus. External TV tuner card on GNU/Linux?

Hi I will need to configure a laptop running GNU/Linux with an external TV Tuner card via USB which I am yet to purchase. Does anyone here know of any particular brand/model of TV tuner card which is properly supported by the Linux kernel? Sharing of any experiences would help a great deal. Thanks, Sarath M S

India's $35 Tablet- The Everything Killer

Hi, On July 22 a $35 (or 1500 INR) hand-held Linux computing device was unveiled by Shri Kapil Sibal, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development of India. The goal of the project is to lower the price to around $20 in time and eventually reaching the amazing price of $10. In a tablet form-factor and using an unspecified variant of Linux (that some have said might be Android), the cost should remain low while offering a wide range of functionality. The Sakshat descendant is said to be capable of supporting video conferencing, viewing a wide selection of video and image files, word processing, de/compressing files, printing with CUPS, full Internet browsing with Javascript and Flash, wireless communications, and remote device management. Hi All, I need to give a remote presentation on the benefits of using Free Software to an audience composed of college students (technical, management), faculty, decision makers at the college. If anybody has made similar presentations, please send me the odp file. Also I need to conference in via my laptop, are there any suggestions for doing video/audio chat + presentation sharing. May be it is already known to you, but I thought it is interesting protest, and we should ask our Indian scientists to do the same. all UC Faculty would be strongly encouraged to: - Decline to peer review manuscripts for journals from the Nature Publishing Group. - Resign from Nature Publishing Group editorial and advisory boards. - Cease to submit papers to the Nature Publishing Group. - Refrain from advertising any open or new UC positions in Nature Publishing Group journals. - Talk widely about Nature Publishing Group pricing tactics and business strategies with colleagues outside UC, and encourage sympathy actions such as those listed above. We clearly recognize that the consequences of such a boycott would be complex and present hardships ...
