James Mathew writes "This is an interesting story from Kerala, India, where the ruling Communist Party organized a national conference in its efforts to hijack the Free Software Movement, which has enviable roots in the state. They got Novell to sponsor it. On the second day of the conference, a few free software activists who displayed posters against Novell were manhandled by the organizers and police — typical of what is expected from them. Most of the snaps taken during the scuffle were forcefully deleted by the organizers, after seizing the protesters' mobile phones. Still they couldn't delete all. Here is another low-by-blow account."
It seems that "hijacking" is such a catchy phrase nowadays.
- Hijacking means to take over by force.Hijacking may refer to: In property:* Aircraft hijacking or 'skyjacking'* Carjacking* Credit card hijacking en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijackhttp://www.google.com/url?sa=X&start=10&oi=define&ei=whkhSb7cIYau6wOW4vCgCA&sig2=4c_LgOJSVMymunOQpjcd9g&q=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijack&usg=AFQjCNFlW5Xts1_MrmahbfEfEGfMRle2_w
HOW the hell can anyone hijack a peoples' movement? I saw that James Mathew used his gnu.org.in id to post this slashdot message. Why is FSF-India promoting this "hijack" theory everywhere? I remember seeing the important people of FSF-India sharing the dais with the Left, holding important positions in the Left Govt. in Kerala, using the Left whenever some help is needed and then this dual standards... FSF-India cannot even get an appointment with a Minister without the help of the Left. It was the Left backed school teachers' assn which promoted free software in Kerala. It was because of the Left that patents in software were not adopted in Parliament... What does FSF-India have to say for itself?

Dear Vikram,
The fact that i used the official id for the slashdot post was a slip from my part and i apologize for the same. I would also like to clarify that the opinions stated in the post has nothing to do with FSF-India and are entirely my own. The rest of the mail, it think stands answered with this clarification.

My question still stands: HOW can anyone HIJACK A PEOPLES' MOVEMENT?

Refering to V. Sasi Kumar's mail regarding the Chennai convention.. Was he speaking as a layman or member of FSF-India board? Does Anivar make his headline hijacking statements as a FSF-I member or in his own capacity? Is James Mathew not a FSF-I whole-timer? In fact I saw the FSF-I Chairman sitting on the dais with Left leaders on the first day of conference. I also remember the nuisance created on multiple mailing lists prior to the conference. Either way. All irresponsible statements are going to make you all OBSOLETE as you may end up being a not-for-profit company without a people. FSF-I still owes an explanation for this and previous issues and silence is NOT an option.

The question under debate is not the contribution or intentions of the left party. Here we see a movement built upon guaranteed freedom of contributors being abused by Novell. The entire turmoil arises because of this abuse of a movement. And now look who all are fighting - the constituents of a community which are supposed to collaborate and share.
Reminds me of the innumerable people vs state struggles elsewhere where people and state fight pitched battles against each other, just because some development-crazy entreprenuer sitting in some remote part of the world wants to bring in a dubious project - and enjoys watching the street-fights.
Developmentalists just became smarter, so lets be more cautious.
