Once C.Radhakrishnan (Writer in malayalam) said. "The main threat we done to our language wass the making of malayalam equivalents for Technical words. It was done by a Team in 'Kerala Bhasha Institute' lead by Shri.N.V krishnavarier." tne essence of the rest of his article is as follows. They published a Technology equivalent Words dictionary. They used sanskrit words frequently as malayalam words. Malayalam is a growing language. In malayalam we adopted so many Tamil,sanscrit,portugeese,English words and make it as a part of our language. This translations by bhasha institute were took place inall malayalam text books. This made a huge divide between English medium and malayalam medium students. Those who completed malayalam medium schooling feared in front of english technical words, that he never heard before in college classes. This conversion made the language more tougher and ununderstandable than the content. japan and china are adopted the same technical terms in english to their language. Please keep these in mind."Ganam","soothram","Mruthu saamagri"etc are pure sanscrit words. these are the words used only by "savarna" people or budhijeevees in common usge. these does note communicate with a mass. The most appropriate translation for *free software* is *swatahnthra software* .The malayalam translation of GPL done by Mahesh T.pai have some problems of communication(sometimes only me). I think "Swathanthra software Fountation" is more communicatable than "Swathanthra software Prathishtanam". Dear All, This discussion on the dependance of M$ products by the organizations only reminds me of the good old (but famous) 'fortune' cookie: Imagine that Cray computer decides to make a personal computer. It has a 150 MHz processor, 200 megabytes of RAM, 1500 megabytes of disk storage, a screen resolution of 4096 x 4096 pixels, relies entirely on voice recognition for input, fits in your shirt pocket and costs $300. Hello, It's nice to hear more words in Malayalam for "Free Software". 1. Ganana Soothram 2. Mridu saamagri and now to add to this (3). Asaya upakaranam; This word I got from a magazine(vivaravicharam) published by the ATPS(Appropriate Technology Promotion Society). The word spelt in malayalam is attached in this mail. Finding malayalam words for the technical terms is a good initiative. But the "freedom" to choose which word should be left to the user. It's common that there are many alternatives for a term in Malayalam. also that some words have different meanings in different parts of Kerala. > They used sanskrit words frequently as malayalam words. Please note that the words savarna and budhijeevees are not equivalent or identical in any manner. An easy way to chose the appropriate word is to give all these words to the public and they will decide which to follow. Standardisation which M$ has driven by marketing and a good product( Kindly dont whin, I am using a outlook here). The next good quality product which can out-perform the existing one will become a next standard. So, if any of us want, then need to involve in OO or other Office Suite and make it Highly helpful to common masses. Quality of the product should market itself.( for eg. google,Linux kernel in enterprise etc.) BTW for CV's better use ASCII format.

Is a free alternative to CDS/ISIS available? `CDS/ISIS' is a database application. Institutions need to enter into an agreement with UNESCO to distribute it. An educational institution I know is creating a bibliography, which will be distributed on CDs. They are creating a searchable list of authors, publishers, editions, and abstract of articles / books and journals on a particular subject to be distributed on a non-profit (apparently) on a stand alone CD. The work is in very preliminary stage of digitsing and we) might be able to influence the institution into using a free alternative. [Fsf-friends] Indian translations of `free s/w' (was - Tamil translation for "free software")

If people bother to create graphics of the term `free software' in their respective languages, I volunteer to create a `translations in Indian languages` page for FSF India. The graphics should be small, and in png / jpeg format. (No gifs). If possible, use a gpl'ed fonts. No need for fancy art work; just black letters on white background. Why graphics?? Because ISCII is on the way out; being replaced by Unicode but several legacy Operating systems do not support Unicode.
