Dear All, This discussion on the dependance of M$ products by the organizations only reminds me of the good old (but famous) 'fortune' cookie: Imagine that Cray computer decides to make a personal computer. It has a 150 MHz processor, 200 megabytes of RAM, 1500 megabytes of disk storage, a screen resolution of 4096 x 4096 pixels, relies entirely on voice recognition for input, fits in your shirt pocket and costs $300. Hello, It's nice to hear more words in Malayalam for "Free Software". 1. Ganana Soothram 2. Mridu saamagri and now to add to this (3). Asaya upakaranam; This word I got from a magazine(vivaravicharam) published by the ATPS(Appropriate Technology Promotion Society). The word spelt in malayalam is attached in this mail. Finding malayalam words for the technical terms is a good initiative. But the "freedom" to choose which word should be left to the user. It's common that there are many alternatives for a term in Malayalam. also that some words have different meanings in different parts of Kerala. > They used sanskrit words frequently as malayalam words. Is a free alternative to CDS/ISIS available? `CDS/ISIS' is a database application. Institutions need to enter into an agreement with UNESCO to distribute it. An educational institution I know is creating a bibliography, which will be distributed on CDs. They are creating a searchable list of authors, publishers, editions, and abstract of articles / books and journals on a particular subject to be distributed on a non-profit (apparently) on a stand alone CD. The work is in very preliminary stage of digitsing and we) might be able to influence the institution into using a free alternative. If people bother to create graphics of the term `free software' in their respective languages, I volunteer to create a `translations in Indian languages` page for FSF India. The graphics should be small, and in png / jpeg format. (No gifs). If possible, use a gpl'ed fonts. No need for fancy art work; just black letters on white background. Why graphics?? Because ISCII is on the way out; being replaced by Unicode but several legacy Operating systems do not support Unicode. Do we really require a regional language translation for this. To my opinion, its more important to convey the meaning of free or freedom in FSF's context to the people. Also adapting the english usage of free software to regional languages as such would give us an edge as we will have a common notation irrespective of the languages, which will make things more easier. This is my personal feeling as I don't have idea of the technicality of languages, and I feel adapting a word from another language will not do any harm, instead its one way enriching the language. Free Software in Tamil should be _Sudanthiram_ Software and NOT viduthalai. There are lot of difference between the two words if you contemplate. Viduthalai would be like Freedom from some form of a clutch. Sudanthiram signifies Freedom as a concept.

A very HAPPY & SUCCESSFUL New year to all. ()^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^() Year 2003 is past. It is time for reflection and action for time ahead. I wish all the visionaries, developers & users of Freedom Software a great success for the year 2004. Special thanks and wishes to FSF India group who made it a point to get Free Software included in School syllabus first time in Kerala(Probably first in India). I feel it is one of the greatest success for FSF India. Experience of the past year shows that children, parents & teachers here are now aware that there are "computers that will work without Microsoft". For many this awareness itself is a piece of brand new knowledge. Schools in general are getting to know more about it. Of course as usual with any change, there are difficulties, confusion, politics, groups, hard core oppositions, allegations and other intricacies. But in general there is a welcoming change. Schools even received circulars asking them to use OpenOffice. Is is good. Let's hope it will do more good in coming years. For year 2003, Swathantra Software Solutions & Support(S2S2) at Kannur did provide substantial support in helping schools to learn about Free Software. DOEACC Drops Microsoft From Syllabus, Ushers In Open Source ASHU KUMAR NEW DELHI: In what could hit MicrosoftÂ's interest in Indian market, the government owned non-formal software education outfit DOEACC has silently modified its syllabus dropping subjects on Microsoft technologies and increasing focus on open operating systems such as Linux. DOEACC Â- earlier known as Department of Electronics Accreditation of Computer Courses Â- currently has around 4.6 lakh students enrolled with its accredited institutions in different courses known as O, A B and C Level schemes. Microsoft Â- a majority market share holder in operating and desktop software products Â- spends substantial money and efforts to promote its own technologies in the student community. The idea is to catch students young and increase the skillbase of Microsoft technologies. The new DOEACC syllabus, which is applicable for the ongoing semester, does not include Windows Programming and Visual Basic for A and B level courses. Besides, Linux has been added in the detailed syllabus of a subject called Â'Operating SystemsÂ'. The DOEACC revises its syllabus every three years. The syllabus books of DOEACC clearly mention that one of the salient features of revised version is Â'inclusion of free domain softwareÂ'. When contacted, a highly placed official of DOEACC Â- an autonomous body under the administration of Department of Information Technology Â- confirmed the move to increase focus on open source software. Â"We have dropped obsolete technologies such as COBOL programming and several new subjects have been introduced such as Mobile Computing and Software Quality management. Moreover, the new syllabus focuses more on open source technologies rather than on proprietary technologies,Â" he said. Microsoft officials could not be reached for comment. DOEACC imparts computer training to students through its own and accredited private institutions across the country while keeping control of course curriculum and examination process. DOEACC has also started imparting courses in emerging areas such as computer hardware, bio-informatics and call centre skills. Further, this is also desirable, because, for an application like php, one may add more arguments to the configure line, if appropriate. The most important thing we can learn from Free Software, is the importance of reasoning for one's self, without shifting this burden to others. Constant reference and use of source code is a must to understand how and why the code works. *rpm and *deb do not encourage reasoning. Seeking source files, and compiling from them, is the right way to stay in control. Once all users understand how to install and use applications directly from the sources, would they seek a commercial package?

Long Mail! Hi, Summary: this note is to inform and seek your help for FSF Stall at the WSF Event, manage the Media Centre, and give any helping hand (time and money). Richard Stallman and several other leaders of Free software from Europe, Latin America will be visiting. We have a unique event to organize and witness in Mumbai this January, an international event called World Social Forum. Read more about it from http://www.wsfindia.org. Since the use of Swatantra Software (read free software) is concieved as an important social and ethical practice by the organizers of this event, which actually takes place every year at one place or other in the world, they have agreed to use only GNU/Linux in an important facility of the event called Media Centre. Media Centre is a place where all the journalists from all around the world who will visit the place to cover the event will be using the computers to send emails, exchange documents with their offices, compose articles etc. This Media Centre will be using exclusively GNU/Linux. An important occassion for all of us to celebrate! But, at the same time a very crucial responsibility. There will be 160 PC running GNU/Linux. We dont want to accept any failures. All the journalists who will be coming there are NOT GNU/linux users. At most they know how to use a desktop. So we will provide them with the best of what GNU/Linux provides with best office software, and a few of the communication tools they need to work. These PC are required to be internationalized so that they could with a touch of a button could be able to use different keyboards. It is expected most people will be using French, Spanish, German and English. Several East Europian and Asian friends are also expected. We should install, test, and maintain all the machines before they are deployed for ten days, the actual event is from 16th to 22nd January. Media Centre should begin functioning from 15th afternoon to 23rd morning. There is another facility where online translation of the speaches will be provided. The people who want translation will be using a radio, sets will be provided, and an FM station will be setup for this purpose. Even for this hitech event the organizers have chosen to use GNU/Linux. FSF Europe and others are helping this to happen. FSF India Stall: At this stall we will have people telling and distributing information, and other goodies if any to the visitors. Richard Stallman will be there all the six days in Mumbai and he will be giving around 4-5 speaches and will be participating in several round table meetings. Our repsonsibility is to provide enough volunteers who know GNU/linux Desktop well to help the journalists and other important visitors to use the computers at the Media Centre. So, please try to volunteer to support this event and take up a responsibility. Since the media centre is required to be running 24 hours, we need to do a shift system so that we are always there to help. We need to people who would like to help the users to do their tasks, such as sending mails, printing documents, saving files, making CDs when they leave, composing documents, spell checking, setting the language options, providing internet facility etc. The technical skills needed are not very high. More than general familiarity to GNU/linux is enough. The PC will have either GNOME or KDE installed. We also need some experts around to trouble shoot and fix installation related problems. We need about 40 volunteeers in all, with about 15 people to be there during the day time on any day. Let me remind the dates are 15th to 22nd. Installation will team however will start the work by 12th morning. BTW, the venue is National Stock Exchange grounds Goregaon. We cant get a better opportunity to show case to the world that Swatantra Software is mature and will meet the IT aspirations of people. We had demonstrated the software before Sajith at IT Mission. He then commented that they opt Mandrake for this purpose. I think there is no difference between Mandrake and RedHat. The copyright issues were not raised by Sajith but complained only about the functioning of the Software package developed by CDIT. I don't blame him for this matter. Because raising such issues(copyright) is not his duty. The Akshaya logo was printed on all CD's. But the RedHat logo is printed only on the CDs which contained the RedHat distro. Hai Ramanraj, I remember that once we had a discussion in affording computer access to everybody in the country. At that time you have pointed out many facts including the scandals in India The Government itself had taken a initiative in promoting IT among common people(AKSHAYA). It gains more significance when the project happens to be implemented on "Free Software" also. So that the advantages of FS may reach them also. An attempt is made to topple this effort and that was the background of such a report in NIE. CDIT is one of the public sector institution which had earlier admitted the superiority of FS and had started a good campaign on it. Its getting immense influence in the society. Efforts are also made to downsize CDIT's activities in FS. Actually there are two sets of CDs. The first set contains 3CDs which contains the RH LInux 9 OS. The logo is printed only on these CDs. The OS is not customized. It is copied as it is in the RedHat's site. The second set contains a single CD with packages developed by CDIT. This CD doesn't bear the logo of RedHat. The Akshaya project is completely a non-commercial initiative and as I have said earlier there is nothing in copying the logo. Manilal > Apparently, there are two CDs. There is no wholesale. As per the work order CDIT has to develop and distribute a free software familiarisation CD for entry level users. By realising the need, it was CDIT's own decision to distribute OS along with it for which no commercial activity is involved. We have to encourage such a realisation by a public sector firm. As CDIT have used content of a redhat distribution for this purpose, they thought that it is morally right to give the credits to redhat. Hello, It is clear that the news in Indian Express and Kerala kaumudi are highly fabricated. Immediate steps should be taken to clear all the issues behind the Akshaya project should be sort out. Another recent development is that in yesterday's Malayala Manorama there was a press release by the Microsoft(Sanjeev Mathur).He said that they are going to release the Malayalam version of Windows OS and MS office soon. He also added that MS is going to spend 90 crores for the govt schools in Kerala. The press release also included a statement on anti-free software. The recent developments should be read with this. We must remember that the akshaya project has also a Windows version and it's almost complete. hi friends I mentioned of warranty because of concern for those life support systems that could run on free software, because when I speak to people about linux they are worried about security and safety of data and not many of them can understand coding of the software , Mr .K.Ramanraj had focused some points about the source code that is given with the free software, I agree with his point that if we ensure the code is written well without errors with good quality control checks we can distribute free software with out warranty . I basically am a computer technician , I have been using linux since 1996, then technology was very costly and now free software is available in plenty and I very happy when I came to know about RMS and his Free software movement I read his story on the gnu website. The Red hat a proporietary software , It is a shocking news , It uses the linux kernel ? how could they make it proprietary ? regards sylvester

On the whole, it appears that press is report is presented without a good research. 1) The Report was HIGHLY misleading to the general public. 2) A highly inadequate research had been done by the author/editor of that paper. 3) Incomplete information; half side of the story presented to the public. We need to inform the newindpress editor, regarding the mistakes they have made and see through that it is corrected. I have sent a mail yesterday itself and dunno how responsive/responsible newindpress will be. Senthil

They can be compiled and installed on any distribution. Also in the RedHat's Trademark Guidelines it is said clearly that "If you are an educational institution, a not-for-profit organization, a user group, or an individual affiliated with or employed by any of those organizations, Red Hat grants you a trademark license with respect to the RED HAT mark for use with the non-commercial redistribution of Red Hat® Linux® in the form you electronically downloaded it from our FTP site or other authorized electronic download sites or as copied from an original disk from Red Hat or its authorized distributors (either from the boxed set or delivered directly to you by Red Hat or an authorized distributor)." Hi, The popular malayalam computer magazine, ITLokham has called for a discussion on about "free softwares". The editorial of the current issue says Computer users are still in confusion about switching to Free softwares. So we wish to start a discussion on this. Please send us your comments. If your suggestion can be a torch for the still confused users,we are glad to act as a medium for it The current issue contains two article about free softwares. One is the translation of RMS's "Can you trust your computer", (Translation by me). Another article is by Mr. Subodkumar Fadke, modular Infotech pune. He argues that "Anything that is available free is bad". He compares free softwares with clock he got free with a fridge he bought!. (He dontknow anything about issue of freedom at all!!!). I dont think there is any meaning in responding to the meaningless article by Fudke. But we need to respond to the initiative of the magazine to start a discussion about the free software. I admit that the Logo is printed on the CD. The CD's are issued by the CDIT to ITM but not to the public. Then how did the Indian Express people came to know the issue. It's clear that Akshaya project is non-comercial project. If the logo issue is solved then what is the problem with distributing the CD's? But the newspaper has not quoted the logo issue, instead they are focussing on "mass copying". Which is allowed by the GPL and RedHat. Then Why these people(Indian Express and Keralakaumudi) are trying this way. They are also trying to link this issue with FRIENDS which is absolutely unnecessary. They are trying to relate it with FRIENDS. Why are they doing such an attempt? It's clear that someone is trying to play a fowl game on behalf of linux. It is said in the article that the CD's are being commercially distributed. I don't understand what is the commercial value behind the Akshaya project.It's also clear that somebody has mislead the newspaper. The Free Software community should note that this is not the case of mere "infringement of copyright law" as you say. It'll bring down the image of Free Software in the community. People(i mean the common man not techies) will be afraid in using free software. Hello everybody, I wish to share with you a news snippet. The New Indian Express had declared RedHat Linux as a Proprietary software. Ref: http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20031223001556&Page=R&Title=… It is said in the EULA of RedHat Linux that "Most of the Linux Programs are licensed pursuant to an open source EULA that permits you to copy, modify, and redistribute the software, in both source code and binary code forms." But Indian Express had declared, quoting some official sources that RedHat is a proprietary software. It's said in the RedHat license that anybody can copy RedHat Linux for non-commercial purposes. The AKSHAYA Project which is a community literacy programme is a non-commercial initiative by the govt of Kerala. I just can't understand the motto behind such a report. The newspaper is trying to make AKSHAYA project a commercial initiative. I don't recollect the exact story, but in one of Swami Vivekananda's books, there is a narration, wherein a group of philosophers would be discussing about god and a small boy would walk in and say, "If all these are true, then what are we doing here". Sometimes, _I feel_ that discussing/arguing about Philosophy is vain. Any thoughtful material I find, I absorb it and get back to work. And that's how I see most of my friends are. Ok.
