SAMBA Query

Hi All We have Win2000 as PDC doing authentication of all our network users and we wish to replace it with Samba server or any other alternative which will do the similar job. Now I have installed Samba server but I am facing the following problems a) Client authentication is not happening at the startup. But we browse the network neighbourhood and double click on the Samba it is accepting the login name & password. What I need is that at startup client is authenticated by the Samba server itself. b) Samba server networks runs only as WORKGROUP and not like DOMAIN Can anybody guide me to FAQ or Tutorial or some alternative where I could nearly replicate my existing Win2000 server so I can dump it as soon as possible. MS Virtual PC & Linux

Hi, Has anyone used Microsofts Virtual PC s/w to host Linux as a guest O/s ? The MS Website docs only mention other Win O/s's that can be run, but some other pages also mention linux. I would normally use VMWare, but I just want to know if anyone on this list has actually used VPC, and how it compares to VMWare, for Linux. Thanks Shahed.

How could i NOT to browse dir contents!! For example, i want some user A to see only "/home/<username>" Even he should not be able to do cd /,or cd /tmp ot ls -l / etc -Dilip

dear friends, I use knoppix 3.3.I use my emacs editor in JAVA mode to write my JAVA programs. after i save and try to exit my program to compile it a line in the buffer says that whether it should save this to /.abbrev_defs file , i do not understand why ? since as far as i know this file is used to store emacs abbrevs.same is the case when i write programs in C language. if anybody knows about it please let me know. bye Yahoo! Introduction

Hi I would like to introduce myself as a linux enthusiast. i started using linux in 2000 with a mini distro like mulinux on a Umsdos system and am currently using Slackware 9.1 on an ext2 partition Thanks to Mejo Jose (another linuxer in this list) who made those available cheaply and quickly. Just thought of joining this list to share and add to my knowledge and interests. Mumbai_GNULinux Group & GNU/Linux Users Group, Mumbai

Hello everyone, Let me introduce myself as the founder of http://linux.mejokj.com. I have been using and promoting linux for years . I recently came to Mumbai and one of the first things I did here was to join the linux users group , Mumbai. But when I searched on net, I found to linux users groups - 1) Mumbai_GNULinux(a)yahoogroups.com , 2) linuxers(a)mm.ilug-bom.org.in. Is there any different between the above two groups? I subscribed to both the mailing lists and has been reading all the mails send by other members. The Mumbai Gnu Linux group has got around 200 members(yahoo says so) but I am not sure how many of them are really active. I am unaware of the number of members in ILUG mumbai. Anyway their site http://www.ilug-bom.org.in/ is completely unmaintained and not updated frequently. The bottom line here is that - the linux users of mumbai are not organised(Correct me if I am wrong). I couldn't understand what's the need for two different groups for members having the same interest. Can't both the groups merge and become one big, strong, active group? UNITY IS STRENGTH. ALWAYS! I would request all the members of both the groups to express their opinion about this. I am sure that we can do a lot more things together then we are doing right now, and in a much better way. What I have written in this mail is my personal opinion. If what I have written here is completely wrong or if there's something that I shouldn't have written, I apologize! Hi I have a old PC Celeron 500 64mb RAM 40g HDD and 1.44mbFDD It is a IBM PC. I want to try other distros like Knoppix and Gentoo and they have ISO images or live Cds What alternatives do I have in such case and how do i go about it Thanks and Regards Ninad

[ILUG-BOM] Anyone used a GNU/linux based Answering Machine software? Any recomendations?

Hi All, I was planning to deploy an answering machine software in the office this week. Has anyone on the list done this before and would care to make any suggestions / recommendations on which is good / bad and why? Looking at the various packages available I was considering mgetty...
