small foot-print GNU/Linux

Hello All, Looking for resources on working on a very small footprint GNU/Linux for project we plan to start in the Affordable Solutions Lab. The idea is to put enough stuff on 32MB Flash RAM, in a thin machine that can run Mozilla and some apps, probably based on it using XUL. We looked at uclinux, but that's not what we are looking for ... The project aims to squeeze a normal network enabled kernel, with display, VMM etc into as small a size as possible. Any pointers? Problem creating usernames with dots

Hi I wasn't able to create a username with dots (m.vinayak) on my local machine which runs RH 9. Any idea why this has been disabled and how this can be circumvented. This was allowed on RH 8. Do all latest distros do the same thing or is this a RH thing? Printing from GNU/Linux m/c -> Windows m/c

Hello Everyone, I am trying to share a printer connected to windows98 m/c. I am using cups to manage printing from GNU/Linux box. The printer is an Epson dot matrix 24 pin series printer. on the windows98 m/c printer is shared(no authentication required) and is visible in the Network Neighbour Hood as shared. In cups I tried few settings but results have not been encouraging at all. Setting 1 Deviece URI : smb://1.2.3.4:80/printer_name Driver selected was Epson 24 series. But after these settings I get error saying "Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFULL" The log level setting for cups is at debug2 but the error log also shows the same statement nothing more. Setting 2 Device URI : ipp://1.2.3.4/printer_name or Device URI : http://1.2.3.4/printer_name Driver was the same as in above case. After doing this setting I get an error saying "host 1.2.3.4 is busy or is down will retry in 30 seconds." and then the same line is also present in the error log. Printing to the same printer is posible from another windows machine. but cups is having trouble. Suggestions anybody. Thanks in Advance Shashank

Hi all, Would like speakers, volunteers, suggestions for the planned workshop. So far, Nagarjun, Dinesh and SameerDS (thats me) have agreed to speak. The focus will be on PC Vendors, so the topics would be as follows: Various Distributions Installations of various types Network settings Desktop Applications and other productivity tools Generaly System Adminstration Sameer. storage of temperary files

hi all , due to some reasons I cannot store the various log files in the hard disk... I don't need to store those log files in permanent memory (i.e. in disk), i can afford to loose after the system is switched off.... Getting BTTV working

Hi! Has anyone here ried using xawtv on a bt878/848 chipset. (Im not too sue which one it is coz everytime i go hunting to get it working ... Theres always something else pushing me back to win). Basically, if i boot to win, start pixelview, and then reboot (WITHOUT SHUTTING DOWN) back into linux, i can get some kinda reception. Until then I just cant get ANYTHING! Also, somehow I find the audio lower on linux as compared to xp. But then i find it equal to that of 98. Is there any known plugin that can be utilised to gain audio ? - Satish

How to spead up Appache

Hi Friends, In my linux server (LOCAL), accessing data through the PHP scripts from MySQL tables, it is taking more time. Earlier it was very fast. Now a days some reports it is taking more than five minuits. Earlier it use to come with in a minuit. What may the problem and what is the settings I have to make in Appache to spead up the process.
