Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Weapons Issues for an informed public debate
The talk will primarily address issues such as the questionable nature
of the hypothesis of nuclear deterrence and the possibilities of
accidental nuclear war, the issues that bear upon nuclear energy policy
are the economics of nuclear power, the safety of nuclear reactors, and
the impacts on public health and the environment from the nuclear fuel
cycle.

Dr. M. V. Ramana
Dr. Ramana, a physicist by training, is currently a Fellow at the Centre
for Interdisciplinary Studies in Environment and Development (CISED),
Bangalore. He obtained his M.Sc. in Physics from the Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur, and his Ph.D. from Boston University, U.S.A. He has
held research positions at the University of Toronto, Canada, the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University, U.S.A.
He has taught at Boston, Princeton and Yale Universities. His broad
research interests are in the area of energy and environment. He
specializes in studying the Indian nuclear energy and weapons
programmes. Currently he is examining the economic viability and
environmental impacts of the Indian nuclear power programme. He is
actively involved in the peace and anti-nuclear movements, and is
associated with the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace as well
as Abolition-2000, a global network to abolish nuclear weapons. With C.
Rammanohar Reddy, he is co-editor of the book, “Prisoners of the Nuclear
Dream”, published by Orient Longman in 2003. He writes regularly on this
issue both in academic journals and popular press.
