This is interesting. I posted a similar query here about 2-3months back. MTNL now has pay per use scheme (no monthly rent). So say if I get DSL at home and office. ie. I pay installation charges for both places. So DSL is activated on both lines. But I take Night Unlimited (DSL NU) scheme at only one place, obviously home, so I can monitor night downloads and I take pay as you use scheme (DSL MTNL) for office. But at both places I use same (home) username and password so pay per use is NOT used at all. And may be I can setup cron job at office that will reboot modem at 00;00 and stop it at 08:00. And I can have downloading going on both places. This seems quite possible. MTNL should be informed about this. May be you(AD) can do. Amish.

its a wiki page... anyone can edit it... (AFTER registering) so, please go ahead and add all the websites you guys have been mentioning. If you have a contact email from the website you are adding, maybe you can also mail them to say that their website wasnt visible from non MS browsers etc.

I'd like to know 2 things: 1) Is it for real? I mean, has anyone here tried it? 2) Is it safe to give my home address online ? Seminar on GNU/Linux

Hi all, I am a student of S K Somaiya College of Arts, Science and Commerce. We are having our annual festival between 12th to 17th December 2005 combining all the sections of the college which includes Department of Computer Science and I. T. On this occasion, I would like to have a seminar on GNU/Linux for encouraging the usage of GNU/Linux among my college students. I invite, anyone in the list whoever would like to conduct this seminar with reference to the following points with some experience in the industry. 1) What is Linux (Kernel, history, Linus Torvalds, Free Software is exactly?) 2) Why Linux? (Comparison with Windows, Security, Reliability, Features) 3) The X-Window System and Desktop Environments (GNOME, KDE) 4) Basic tips, Do's and Don't for installing and using Linux and Hardware Compatibility Details 5) Reducing Software Piracy and encouraging usage of Licensed Software and/or using GNU/Linux and software available from internet (website links) The target audience of students could be between 100 - 120. Though I haven't found any sponsors for the CD, I wish to distribute Free CD's (Knoppix 3.6 or 3.9, Ubuntu, Damn Small Linux [any one] ) to all those who attend this seminar and/or give them away as prizes by conducting a quiz at the end of the seminar to get a feedback of the seminar . Ofcourse, the CD's will be burnt on the blank CD-R's available in the market. If there are any sponsors interested, kindly let me know. Internet with Fedora Core 1

Hello friends, I'd like to ask a very trivial question today. Actually I am a novice Linux user and am taking sure but slow steps towards complete migration from Windows to Unix/Linux. I am using RedHat Fedora Core1 at my home and college, but the only real hurdle in my path to becoming a full Linux only user is that I cant connect to the internet. I have this FC1 system, with a Bsnal broadband connection. At the time of installation, I didnt configure my IP address or DNS service. I let it remain default to DHCP. But now when I create a new xDSL connection using Internet connection wizardover my NIC card (eth0), the connection does activate as the message says, but the websites dont open. Also, at the time of bootup, what shoul be the message regarding network interface eth0. I hav always got an OK message when I didnt configure it . But after assigning it an IP 192.168.10.1, it says failed to bring up my ethernet card. So kindly help me out, coz although I am comfortable with a little administration and software package installation, I still experience a lot of problems, when trying to configure sendmail or DNS or NIS etc and this internet connection problem is making me mad. As I had really set a deadline to switching over to Linux fully( no windows usage at all), by this month's end. I hope many of u can help me out, by giving me some insight on where i might be doin something wrong, where can i find step by step tutorials etc. I hav also installed Roaring Penguin's pppoe software, but even that failed to help. What I did was change the password on the site. Then launch the ADSL modem configuration and change the login details and Save. Then I had a couple of days with the new password. Then a overall network outage happened. i.e. even the 1504 ppl couldn't connect. then they came back on and I was still out. Many calls later... I had a guy asking me to do everything on the modem conf except stand on my head. In the end I happened to mention that I had changed the password to non-default value. It was like I committed some sacrilege to ancient MTNL gods. He asked me to reset it back and never change it again. I did the same and sure as hell it worked the very first time. So ... get your own conclusions. Gishu

Why is that damn password change option on the MTNL webpage if they are gonna shut you out if you don't login with their password.

[OT] Firewall and Triband

Hello All, Here is a link that can be used to test a firewall online. http://scan.sygatetech.com/ There is a firewall in your ADSL modem too and by default it is disabled. There are additional services that can be disabled in the inbound direction. This will give additional protection over your linux firewall. If you change your password at the mtnl website and next time you put on your system the net is down, don't worry. Simply go to the 192.168.1.1 interface of the ADSL and change your stored password. It is in Advanced > ATM VCC . Do not forget to go to Tools > System and click 'Save and Reboot' . Now your net is up again.
