nstalling x386 linux port on AMD64 PC

I am planning to buy AMD64 based PC within a week. Can I install linux on it using my ubuntu 5.04 CD (386 port) instead of AMD64 port version? I want to do this because of following- * AMD64 port may be unstable & may not have drivers for all hardware. * I want to immediately start working & a less than potential speed is acceptable. My new PC configuration is AMD64-3000,MSI RS480M2 motherboard with ATi chipset, 1GB RAM,80 GB SATA HDD. Regards, Nilesh Raykar

multiple copies of mail

Dear All, I am running Red Hat Fedora Core 4. We have a pop server in which aliases is enabled, Using fetchmail we download mails from single real account say "general" and distribute to users locally. I use Postfix as my MTA with default config. My fetchmail config below poll xyz.com proto pop3 localdomains test.linux.com no dns envelope "Delivered-To" user "general" password "xxx" is * here it works fine, but when I mark copy to other users, they get multiple copies of mail. Hi Amol If you are planning to implement Intel EM64T Architecture in non production environment then you can use Fedora Core 4 (x86_64). If you are planning to implement Intel EM64T Architecture in production environment then use a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 which supports x86_64 architecture. [OT] MTNL DSL - NU plan billing snafu?

I got my MTNL bill a few days ago. For the NU Plan the charge is Rs. 590 (unlimited usage 00:00->08:00) plus additional usage charge to the tune of Rs. 6304! My prime time (08:00->00:00) Internet usage pattern has not changed since I got the DSL service in Apr/05. I suspect there is some billing snafu whereby downloads during 00:00->08:00 have also been counted. Another friend of mine, with the NU plan, got a Rs. 14,000 additional DSL usage charge! Both of us are serviced by the Khar(W) CO. I have already complained to MTNL in writing but have not heard from them yet. Anyone on this list experiencing the same? Were you able to resolve it with MTNL? If not, perhaps we can complain to them collectively - pls. contact me off list. Partly true. The real cause is voice circuits and Govt. revenues. ALL governments take a fat fee from the telcos for voice circuits and in return guarantee them a monopoly. If bandwidth is made cheap voip will wipe out the voice revenue. In fact given the price of copper and huge demand for power, it will be cheaper to rip out the copper signal cable and recast it for power distribution while replacing with optical fibre. U will have instant 1gbps bandwidth. That is what S'pore and Korea have in the pipeline. Ofcourse that would be the end of the telephony companies. In India things are skewed even worse. The copper infrastructure was setup with taxpayers money, on which the DOT (and phone vendors like Bharati telecom, ITI) made insane amounts of money. The government then sold off parts of their equity and pocketed the taxpayers money for such noble purposes as rural telcom. The original players retain the last mile network, in effect being a major stumbling block for other telecos and competing with private companies using public money. The TRAI and telecom mandarins refuse to share their last mile circuits with other service providers and have made it illegal to provide any telecom service without paying licence fees. In the guise of protecting the public the government has effectively held them to ransom, allowing a few players to profit. rgds jtd

[OT] What is keeping us from getting broadband?

Hi, I was just talking with a Swedish friend and I wondered what is keeping India from going broadband? I mean people in foreign countries commonly have 2Mbit connections without download restrictions. My friend is currently studying in a university where he gets to share a 100Mbps 24x7 connection amongst 3 people and the authorities don't care about the downloads, only the uploads :O And he says the fees are included in the university's fees. I personally have logged into his server and downloaded many things, just for fun ^^ and it feels great to download at those speeds from international mirrors! Forget about 100Mbps. A friend in Netherlands has a 8Mbps DSL connection. No restrictions what-so-ever. The cost is very reasonable. In Indian rupees it works out to 1200-1500 bucks. I am not saying that foreign countries are a haven for those who feel the need for speed, rather I am simply saying that the conditions are much better than India. This is a big fact that the internet sucks in India and despite whatever measures our IT / Telecom minister(s) have taken to improve the situation, it hasn't made much of a difference. I still see MTNL DSL being overly priced. Yes, the 200MB / 400MB or whatever limit they put sucks. I can't see any *real* ISPs. Why is it so? Why is it so difficult for them to provide us with fast connectivity? Are the bandwidth prices so high that they cant afford to give us anything better? Are they just lazy? Are they just plain stupid? How are these ISPs "billed"? What are the costs they incurr? I think now TATA, Reliance and other Indian players own major underwater submarine cables, so they should be able to ease the congestion and provide super fast connectivity! What gives here? I read some where that TATA bought Tyco and Tyco's underwater submarine cables' _unlit_ capacity was some Terabits! Reliance purchased FLAG telecom. It too has a huge network and a huge capacity! WTF? India, as a *whole* uses some few hunderd Megabits of capacity and here we have terabits of capacity! Why are lagging behind then? I wan't some answers and I think you guys are best equipped to answer them. Are we really an IT super power? Or are we living a dream? -- Dinesh A. Joshi
