Download speed less than upload speed

I took numerous speed tests on the internet and they show that my upload speed is almost double that of my download speed(35.5kbps). Is their anyway to tweak these settings so the come near equal. I use Arch Linux, unpatched kernel, i686 and cable net which advertises a speed of 64 kbps. -Nikhil

Hi, I need a *second* CPU for under 7-8K and I needed on some input on the current known 5 starred tried and tested - no hassle - setups. My personal preference is for an AMD + MSI combo. But I do not know of the specific models. This machine does not need to be the bling machine.. just normal DTP, spreadsheets, sandbox for web/networking apps, an occasional XP testbed machine etc. Debian should run and if possible detect everything in an hour with my molecular knowledge. All hardcore stuff goes on my machine "1". I do not want to buy something and then caned for buying "closed" hardware. So to put it simply I need a processor (anything decent enough) a motherboard (the two need to do well in tandem and not blow my roof off, no I want an AC h/w) 256 RAM (is what I'm thinking right now- manageable.) a cabinet should set me back by 1500 (exclusive of the 7-8K limit) I have an extra LAN card that I can use. Monitor and display switch operational. Input devices AOK. I have an extra CD drive. May go in for a DVD writer later (out of money) Response invited. Thread closes in 2 days. Game for flame too.. Could you guys please suggest me a good book for C programming in Linux? I want a comprehensive one which touches upon all aspects of C in Linux. I have enquired with TATA McGraw Hill and they don't have one. The only book they have is Complete reference to C. Thanks. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

hi, i have two molecular dynamics codes, both of them take the same input, but the in different format. let me explain, for one code (named PinyMD) in the input file, we have, ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 1 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 2 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cr}\atom_ind{ 3 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.11}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cw}\atom_ind{ 4 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.13}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cw}\atom_ind{ 5 } \mass{12.0107}\charge{-0.13}] and so on........ and for other code (named NMA) the input file, 1 1 2 1 3 2 4 1 5 1 6 2 7 1 8 1 and so on.... the relation between them is very straightforwd. what appears in PinyMD's input file as "na" might be an integer 1 or "cr" be integer 2 for NMA. i am trying to write a bash script, which will read in PinyMD input file and convert in the NMA file, after reading the line, ~atom_def[\atom_typ{na}\atom_ind{ 1 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] ~atom_def[\atom_typ{cr}\atom_ind{ 2 } \mass{14.0067}\charge{ 0.15}] so on..... it should echo, 1 1 2 3 so on.... how do i pick up elements 'na' (which i will replace with some integer) and atom_ind{ 1 } which i will replace with 1? -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.

sending - recieving buffers over the n/w as a struct in c

Morning Fellas, Need some pointers from you folks. Am stuck with a simple issue. On the server i have a struct defined as: struct sendbuff { int count; char toprint[10000]; }; My objective is to pack this buffer across the n/w and recv it on the client. count is a simple counter which i am usign to keep track of the lost/unordered packets is any. My recv system call on the client is as follows. mybuff on the client has been declared of type struct sendbuff. while(1) //Beggining of While { while(bytesrcvd<sizeof(mybuff)) { if ((numbytes=recv(sockfd, (char *)&mybuff, sizeof(mybuff), 0)) == -1) { perror("recv"); exit(1); } bytesrcvd=numbytes+bytesrcvd; } printf("mybuff.toprint is %s\n",mybuff.toprint); //Problematic printf("mybuff.count is %d\n",mybuff.count); //Problematic .....etc } //End of While On the client mybuff is of type sendbuff. The whole problem is that i am unable to interpret the contents of mybuff which is being used to store the contents of the recv() system call. Have outlined the two printf() which i need to work out as //problematic. I know this issue centers around the little/big eindian format issue. Am just going round and round in cirles and would apperciate f/b in helping obtain and print the following: mybuff.toprint and mybuff.count Also one last thing. As the buffer(toprint) size changes the charactersitics of the problem i face increases..:D. Thanks in advance folks.
