Hi list, A recent experience has left me horrified. I was recently at an Airtel relationship center. Their PoS terminal for paying bills via cash/cheques was running windoze ( Some NT variant ). To my horror the system constantly kept on popping up a message - "You have been infected by ...blah blah blah....". This message was of some vague antivirus but not the well known McAffee or Norton. If their PoS running windoze can get infected with a virus then what about the data of countless customers inside that terminal? Afterall it is connected to the internet and anybody can easily hijack it! :O [rant] I am not an Airtel customer anymore but I really wish they continue using Windoze and go out of business soon... :/ May they crash and burn in hell until eternity! >:( [/rant] Ahem...shouldn't somebody bring this to the notice of the media? I mean I can imagine the amount of negative publicity it can bring to M$ ( and not to mention Airtel hahahahaa... ). Weren't their website so insecure that anybody could easily get the itemized bills of any arbitrary customer? So this got me thinking...with the recent "awareness" of better security in the digital domain shouldn't these corporates use Linux based solutions which are inherently more secure AND stable? using already blocked device

hi, is there a way i can use a device blocked by one program, if required by another prog.? the situation is like this, i am running skype on linux and at the same time i want to play xmms for some songs, (i can do it in windows, skype and winamp together so i hear the person as well as some music in backgrond.) to my knowledge i dont think its possible in linux, but just wanting to wish the i am wrong ;-)

Hello all, I wonder if this is the appropriate forum to post my query. I'm Linux newbie, very much interested to learn and share about Linux. I have heard about RHCE certification being one of the hottest in 2006. Seeking advice if joining a coaching class at RH authorised centre is MANDATORY which I think charges quite a bit. I wish to know if any of you is RHCE certified but gained the training elsewhere thru a friend/ Linux expert in Mumbai at comparatively lower cost. If so, please let me know the contact person. HSBC online services not working in Ubuntu/Firefox

I opened an account with HSBC a few days back for my salary deposits. The online@HSBC services are not working in Ubuntu/Firefox. It requires IE 5.0+ or NS Communicator. I tried fiddling with the User Agent string (strangely, most of the IE User Agent strings I found on the net looked like Mozilla/<some stuff>) but to no avail. I've submitted a complaint form but I'm not expecting them to listen to it. Is there any way other than booting into Windows or using IE from Wine? Other than the fact that I would be using, well, IE or win32, I would lose face in front of my sister whom I berate for carrying out *her* online banking business in win32/IE :-( -- Rohit V. hello, I want to know how can I open multiple terminals on the shel using knoppix. with all other distros like debian, redhat etc ctrl + alt + f1 - 6 opens terminals. I however could not do the same with knoppix. will installation on the hard disk give that facility? Krishnakant.

GPL Violations: DLINK bites the dust

Dlink was one of the crooked companies that violated the gpl and was taken to court by Harold Welte. They lost the case. Their defence shows their crookedness and greed. Dlink contended that linux indulged in price fixing by keeping price at zero and hence was indulging in monopolistic behaviour. Therfore by magic Dlink was allowed to violate the terms of the GPL. The court said that irrespective of the allegation of price fixing, Dlink ceased to be a licencee of the gpl if it violtates any clause of the gpl. Case was filed by Harold Welte of iptables fame. Krishnakant could u put this in the press. This is a great victory cause it immediately fixes all responsibility on the distributor without exceptions due to alleged gpl. Time to boycott dlink. Alternative is DAX for switches and low end network stuff. I belive that i have found another gpl violation from one of the largest IT houses in the country. They had developed an embedded kernel on arm for another multinational. The multinational's local contact says that thay dont have the source cause the IT house did not give them the source, and seemed to be unaware of the gpl requirements. Further investigation continues. I am not disclosing names until I am very sure. The company has already lost an order of Rs.30 lacs. If it can play dirty with the gpl it will most certainly do the same to me. -- Rgds JTD

how can I create openoffice .odt files in emacs?

hello all, here is one more strange yet interesting query. if I want to use emacs to create, format, open and save .odt files from openoffice word processor, how can I accomplish it? I will be first interested to create odt documents and then even spreadsheets. I find emacs desktop very comfortable to use. I don't know how good it looks on the desktop but liked it very much. now if I can use it for createing formatted documents and spread sheets, nothing like it. I am already seeking some help for browsing internet with emacspeak. hope some one will drop in with the help for that as well. thanking all. Krishnakant.

Debian 3.1 rocks

Hello All, This is a mini installation report on Debian 3.1. The linux26 kernel option was selected at boot prompt and Debian 3.1 was installed with a 2.6 kernel. The system was P4 2.4 GHz. and Intel 845 GEBV2 mobo. During installation itself the packages were updated from the net ( 120 MB). It detected the video with vesa drivers upto 800 x 600 resol. and sound was detected too. Printer setup was tricky as the kde could not initiate a setup for lpd printers. After a lot of googling I came across this unusual method of setting up a printer and it worked. I downloaded packages using synaptec. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=8302 Another problem was that sound did not work for the other user created for my family members. I looked up /etc/groups and added the new user in the line for 'audio' but still no good. Then after more googling I found this useful link http://www.andreas-janssen.de/debian-tipps-sarge.html#a36 I downloaded the latest alsa-base alsa-oss and the new user too can access sound. Best part was that the 'totem' movie player could play VCDs and DVDs directly without the usual extra downloads. Still I installed the win32 codecs and libdvdcss later. The usb pen drive was also detected, though I had to manually mount it, but it was fun. In synaptec package manager, I came across a kernel for speech called speakup. The details are given below. Krish can try out this kernel for speech processing. The description is given below. "...Linux kernel image for version 2.4.27-speakup This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.4.27-speakup, the corresponding System.map file, and the modules built by the packager. It also contains scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in a unbootable state after an update. If you wish to update a bootdisk, or to use a bootloader to make installing and using the image easier, we suggest you install the latest fdutils (for formatting a floppy to be used as boot disk), and LILO, for a powerful bootloader. Of course, both these are optional. Kernel image packages are generally produced using kernel-package, and it is suggested that you install that package if you wish to create a custom kernel from the sources. This kernel package contains a Linux kernel patched with speakup, a screen reader for the Linux console. Speakup currently supports the following hardware speech synthesizers: * DoubleTalk PC/LT * LiteTalk * Accent PC/SA * Speakout * Artic Transport * Audapter * Braille 'N Speak / Type 'N Speak * Dectalk External and Express * the Apollo2 NOTE: We don't claim this drivers to be stable, use them on your own risk...." All in all, Debian 3.1 is a good distro for those who want to get some installation experience. Its not too difficult. The online helping community is simply fantastic with so much online help available. This distro rocks. well access concentrator is just server on the LAN which is offering PPPOE services. So there can be many on the LAN , and you need to select one. SO.... After you install rp-pppoe-3.8 , run the following command, "/sbin/pppoe -A " You will get a list of access concentrators and services on the command prompt., then make a note which one is yours.... Then , instead of "go-gui" ..just run "go" from the rp-pppoe directory, this will start the PPPOE dialer from command prompt without the GUI.. Also , if you need more assistance , you can give me a call, contact me off the list.

To configure PPPOE follow these steps..I use PPPOE at my place since the last 2 years in Fedora core 5 and Ubuntu . I ll first describe how I did it in Fedora ..then I ll also describe how I did it in Ubuntu... U ll also need a lil help from Winblows... 1] In windows....run "raspppoe" or "pppoeconf" from start menu and click on "Query Services" ..Note down the relevant access concentrator name , and the service name for your provider. 2]In any fedora system , run "system-config-network", In the GUI you get, select New interface , and in the list of connection types, select XDSL . 3] In the GUI that follows , enter the username and password, and also other stuff like activate on boot., allow all users to activate the device etc.. Then click on OK , and click on "save" from file menu 4] Now double click on the interface you just created and in the "advanced" tab, enter the access concentrator name and service name you noted down from windows. Again save the configuration from file menu. 5] now just run "system-control-network" (from menu or terminal ..ur choice :) ..) ...you will get GUI to turn you PPPOE connection on/off. PS : in the menu;..."system-config-network" ==>menu->administration->network "system-control-network" ===> menu->system->network device control METHOD FOR UBUNTU... 1] download latest rp-pppoe (version 3.8 afaik) from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/penguin/open_source_rp-pppoe.php 2] On a standard system....just run "go-gui" from the package , it will give you GUI for PPPOE where you can enter all the relevant fields like username . passord, AC name , service name etc.... and just hit connect If "go-gui" doesnt work..... 3]Run following commands in the rp-pppoe-3.x folder from terminal... cd src ./configure make make install (as root) 4]Now try running "go-gui" In my Ubuntu dapper system, "go-gui" worked fine , and I did'nt need to compile anything much.... Hope this helps....... Please feel free to post any more doubts about this ....

hello all. I have a machine with 2 lan cards one for internet and the other for internal lan. my isp uses raspppoe for internet connection. I believe there is a way to get my ubuntu, debian or knoppix system connect to the internet over ras PPPOE? one lan card has a static ip 192.168.0.2 and is used for my internal network. I have right now un plugged the cable from this card. the one that connects to the internet via ras PPPOE has no IP statically assigned by my isp. it seams to get it dynamically when I use their diler from my desktop. how can I set it up from the command line? since I don't have a gui based screen reader for linux, I have to do it from the shell. thanks, Krishnakant.

blender - an apology

hi, sometime back I had highly praised blender, but had criticised the interface as non-intuitive. On using blender i find i was wrong - the interface is intuitive and suprisingly easy to learn. The reason why i had got that impression was, that i had tried it out two years ago with a borked install, and with an unsatisfactory tutorial. The tutorials now available rock.
