[OT] Linux Multimedia Guide (Book Anyone?)

List, I have a task at hand and need to refer a particular book. The book is titled "Linux Multimedia Guide" authored by Jeff Tranter. If someone has it and wishes to sell it at a reasonable price, please let me know. kubuntu 7.04 and beryl

Hi all, I am running Feisty Kubuntu on a Toshiba A135-S2386 notebook. I am trying to setup Beryl on it. facing some problems... My graphics card is a ATI Radeon Xpress 200M on a T2080 ( 1.73GHz) Dual core. Is the machine good enough? Following the documentation, I installed ATI's fglrx driver. Accordingly, I think I should use Xgl and not AIGLX. For this I added the line: Option "AIGLX" "false" in the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf. Without this, launching beryl would simply stop saying that conpositing is disabled. I installed ATI's driver (restricted modules). glxinfo gives "Direct rendering : Yes" fglrxinfo output is: display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS Series OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8) My xorg.conf is uploaded at : http://pastebin.com/944969 lsmod |grep gl gives: fglrx 540004 11 agpgart 35400 2 fglrx,ati_agp X -version output: X Window System Version 7.2.0 Release Date: 22 January 2007 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.2 Build Operating System: Linux Ubuntu Current Operating System: Linux ZION 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007 i686 Build Date: 04 April 2007 Also following documentation, I restarted X using Xgl using a script recommended on many websites. coolest desktop ?

Hi, I came across this cool info when fiddling with my laptop for solving the hibernate problem -- Temperature info ! so ... # acpi -c -T -B Thermal 1: ok, 43.0 degrees C This with gnome-desktop. Heh, then it struck me, what if i check the temperature on every other desktop env and rate them according to their "coolness" ? KDE and XFCE turned out cooler than gnome, but m'be coz i hadn't enabled any additional features plugins etc etc. But then again if temp is high, would mean that a process is stressing the processor . Can this be a valid way than say top/profile to figure expensive wasteful cycles ? how cool is your tp / desktop ? whats your opinion on this ? regards, C

Hi all, 1)Compiz-Fusion on Ubuntu 7.04 I am using Compiz-Fusion on a Ubuntu 7.04,ATi Radeon XPress 200 series onboard using the proprietary fglrx drivers and Xgl.Though the startxgl script for starting Xgl automatically on boot had a workaround for missing shutdown and reboot buttons,I'm missing my Suspend(Hibernate?) button.Isthere a workaround for this? 2)HAL problems I am the sole user on Ubuntu 7.04 hence my userid has system administration privileges subject to root password.Since I don't have a printer,I disabled cups in System-->Administration-->Services.Also, I disabled Bluetooth support and the second cron service(non-anacron one) and a couple other services.Since then,whenever I login,I'm faced with a dialog box saying "Couldn't initialize HAL" and even after supplying root password,I'm unable to access selected system administration components which include Users and Groups,Services,Network,etc.A dialog box pops up with this: The configuration could not be loaded You are not allowed to access the system configuration. The interesting thing is that after I enabled GUI root login by editing the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf file,even when I login as root,I'm unable to access the above-mentioned components.The above-mentioned dialog box pops up for root as well. :o Can someone help or point out a resource please? LFY July Issue Very Good.

Hello All, This month's LFY issue is very nice. It is dedicated towards freedom and graphics. A lot of articles on freedom. A writeup on President Kalaam's dedication towards freedom. It also has a Fedora 7 DVD ( Not tried yet, so holding the brickbats for now ) and a Graphics applications CD. Included in the CD is a Grafpup live cd iso. It is an 80 MB Puppy Linux Cd thats power packed with graphics applications. You can run Inkscape, GIMP and Co. from this lightweight distro. Very good for demos.
