Hi,
Has anybody use the Reliance WiMax (Broadnet) services? I am
more interested in their services in Mumbai. Good, Bad, Ugly?
Apparently they install separate antenna for each connection. The size
of this is as big as a laptop monitor or such, thats what the
marketing exec told me.
What I want to know is - 1) compatibility with Linux Boxes
2) does it work during the rainy season? Considering that rains in
Mumbai or Panvel is slightly on the extreme side ;), does it work fine
…
[View More]during the rainy season? I guess the same applies to the DTH setup
even.
Only reason, I am thinking its worth a try is because I won't
have to depend on availabilty of power and such because I will be
responsible to provide power to the setup which I can in case of load
shedding as well. Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

Hello All,
We have started an effort, by means of website www.roadjams.info,
to provide real-time traffic information to Mumbai. Would appreciate if
people who are interested to contribute can contact me or mumbai<at>
roadjams.info.
The development requires people to have a GPS enabled phone, (external or
internal GPS) and a small utility that sits on the phone and updates
location to the server.
The software on the mobile is available under GPL. Currently the software
works …

and should be possible in near future.
Thanks,

Dear Friends,
The Debian Live team is pleased to announce the first beta of Debian Lenny's Live images.
Although we missed releasing images for Etch along with the installer images, we are now prepared to release live images within the regular Lenny release process. This is the first official release of Debian Live and the whole team has been working hard during the past 2.5 years to make Debian's own live systems become a reality.
Nevertheless, we do need your help to find more bugs and …

Hi,
I noticed that nobody is interested in a secure operating system like
Kubuntu LINUX (CD-ROM available in 10 weeks by shipping).
But with dual-boot Kubuntu LINUX can one watch any videos and any
image sites without getting spyware and viruses and ad-ware
-------------- that is very serious --------- some idiots might want
to turn off google preferences from advanced to "watch everything" and
then type in "naked mary" or some thing.
On youtube.com can you make DVDs off videos off youtube.…
[View More]com
I mean MTNL is free download at night and some idiot might make a huge
DVD off videos of youtube.com
Those would show all over the world.
Of course, uploads by MTNL are free so nice, decent photos and videos
can be posted for free.
BUT is all this possible using KUBUNTU LINUX or any other linux.

hi,
why do hardware vendors recommend customers to go for windows rather
than linux? Most common reason is that they know nothing about linux,
or are not confident of supporting linux. No one wants to admit lack
of knowledge - so they recommend against it. Not evil minds - just
ignorance. Check it out here:

Yes, cos the dll's available in …
[View More]wine are newer. Wouldn't it be the
same in case of using later versions of windows?
No, virtualbox emulates the Intel hardware and you select the version
of the hardware and the guest and host operating system. Then you
install your copy of Windows and then run visual c++ and visual basic
on it.
Do do the same in linux, one would have to run different instances of
virtual box on linux, below the virtual box, run different (older)
versions of WINE and then the visual C++ and visual basic would run
legally under the different versions of WINE.
By the way, I did run Microsoft Office under WINE, and TALLY under
WINE but the next day they did not run.
I wish somebody would come up with an open source / free ERP version /
or at least a TALLY.

H! Folks,
We would like to conduct ILUG-BOM meeting in IITB/KReSIT. Are there in
IITian lurkers on the list who can book the venue for Sep meet?
Alternately, we would like people from central suburbs (Dadar to
Thane) to come forward and offer venue for the next ILUG-BOM meet.
The date for next meeting will be either 21st or 28th Sep. 2008.
We have following topics and speakers confirmed for Sep. 2008 Meet.
1. Programing with QT by Prashant Shah (Thanks Prashant for coming
forward to …

2. Advance JavaScript Programing by Rakesh Pai (Thanks for your last
and very good session and looking forward to the next one!)
3. Action Plan for Opposing Software Patent (Nagarjuna will brief the
community about the topic and status, if he is around in Mumbai)

Hello,
I am looking for a good mini laptop with the new Atom processor but find
the manufacturers using gimmicks to promote their products. First they
announce a product launch by a certain date in order to apply the brakes
on the rival products and still there is no mention in the news about
the launch. Even during the initial unveiling of the product, they
mention very low prices like 300 to 400 USD as the likely price and
after the product is launched it is much above 600 USD. For the …

buyer it is a whopping 10K above the previous rate.
Even the iphone 3G is sold at a much lower rate in the US and in India
which is price sensitive it is priced too high, almost double. Are
people in developing countries richer than those in developed ones?

I have a comment on virtualization v/s WINE.
WINE does not run my old Visual C++ or Visual Basic Compiler which
runs on the Windows 98 because it says "sorry the new DLL's of
Internet explorer 6.0 or 7.0 are here and conflict with the internet
explorer 3.0 dll's of visual basic). So I prefer virtualization.
That time, less memory was needed --- so it is easy to run multiple
Operating System's on one machine. Of course, one should upgrade to
keep enhancing the software ---- but I only want to …
[View More]learn my Visual
Basic again.
It seems my Visual Basic, Visual Windows C++ and Microsoft Windows 98
edition are finally obsoleted if I try to use Wine but not if I use
virtual box.
