Hello,
I am creating / appending files using a variable as the input name. Eg.
$USER.jpeg makes a file called rony.jpeg . I want to add 2 variables to the
file name instead of one and make $USER-$DATE.jpeg (rony-23/03/11.jpeg).
What is the correct syntax for it as I keep getting errors in the mv as well
as rename command. Tried $USER_$DATE or $USER.$DATE etc but no result. Did
look up google but it has complex sed scripts.

Hi Friends
Here's a wonderful initiative from Arun - a very low-cost product for the
hearing impaired. The best part is that the hardware and software are going
to be made open source and he needs inputs on the same. Anyone willing to
manufacture the product on a large scale are also invited.
Regards
Hameed

OK, I realise the message was too long :) So here is a gist. If interested,
read the whole mail...
I have developed a local paging system based on arduino and 2.4Gz radio
modules. This is aimed at schools for the hearing impaired. It is very low
cost and am releasing it in open source, both hardware and software. I don't
intend to manufacture it either, but will provide all tech support. Anybody
is free to do so.
I need help in releasing the project open source. Take care of the entire
eco system. Of course, anybody and everybody involved will become part of
the project :)
Regards,
Arun

Hi friends,
I have a internet connection from Nivyah Broadband, Mumbai. I have been using it for long now, and sharing it using a netgear router. Unfortunately, around 1 month back, I found that I am not able to use the internet. I did a traceroute, it showed no problem, but I was still not able to browse. I tried using other service provider on the same settings i.e. changing the access-concentrator details etc. it works fine.
Switched back to Nivyah and again the same result. I am not able to browse or in otherwords not able to use internet.
Please can somebody guide me, how can I bypass the ISP blocking me from using internet from a router?
Also, I would like to know, how would an ISP come to know that I am sharing my net connection.
I tried googling it, but was not able to find any satisfying document on same, on my own. If there is anything on same I would definitely like to read on it. Please assist.
Thank you

appropriate plugin found)
Fatrat and tucan having gui also didn't work with rapidshare.
Can anybody help.Thanks in advance

Hello,
After Vodafone announced the commencement of their 3G services that can
give top speeds of 21 Mbps, it was tried out on a Nokia N82 handset
which has UMTS 2100 support and download speed upto 3 Mbps. The speed of
surfing is a wee bit faster than EDGE but not very fast and a mobile
speed test showed a download speed of 281 Kbps, a far cry from the
original claims.
What have been other peoples' 3G experiences?

Most NAT devices have the feature to program the MAC address on the WAN port.
@OP -- it is not clear whether you are using the ISP's box or your
own box to connect to the ISP on the WAN port. Have you called the
tech. support to find out why you are not allowed access to the
Internet. If it is a MAC address issue then look for a solution that
allows MAC address settings on the WAN port.

I would like to trust them but my last experience was weird.
Right now, my EDGE only Samsung Star phone gives a speed result of 1509 Kbps
on mobilespeedtest.com
On dslreports.com, I get a message to choose a larger file, so I choose 1 MB
abd it says "Unstable/too fast a result (1.427s) pleasechoose alarger file".
1 MB is their largest file.
On ISPgeeks.com, my test result is 4 Mbps. Wow! Before doing the tests, I
had cleared by browser cache.
Binand, could you check your email settings. Everytime I reply to a list
message of yours, it goes to your email id only.

Hello,
I am trying to set up an el-cheapo attendance system that only
calculates how late the person has come with reference to a fixed office
time. I don't want to use any database+server thing as that is complex
and users are less than 20. I am thinking of a simple approach with
cheap and simple biometrics to prevent impersonation. A cheap web cam
will click light thumbnails and a timestamp will be generated. Every
month a file will be generated after which the photos can be erased
automatically. The result file will be a .csv one that can be imported
in any Office application.
I am stuck at the point of calculating time difference. There doesn't
seem to be a direct command that will calculate time difference in HH:MM
format. This link mentions a work around
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/shell-script-to-get-the-time-difference/
but it first converts time into %s which is the number of seconds since
1970. However every day for the fixed opening time, say 10:00 this
figure is not constant. One way out is that every day the %s figure is
generated at exactly 10:00 and this is then 'diff'ed with the user's
attendance time in %s. This is then divided by 60.
Is there a simpler bash command that I may have overlooked that simply
takes in 10:17 and 10:00 and says 00:17?

Greetings,
Please note that there are participants from at least 14 countries
apart from India that too within few weeks of announcement.
http://kohacon11.vpmthane.org/ocs/index.php/k/k11/schedConf/registration
Surely the students and practiioners too will gain a lot.
I am planning to experiment and present CentOS as a robust High
Availability Platform for Applications like KOHA/DRUPAL etc. I don't
know what I will Land up with though over the course of time.
Some of the question I am looking at in a practical viewpoint of an
Application and IT infrastructure Architect are:
1. We need to look at lifetime of the application like KOHA - perhaps
10 year in the timeline of a library?
2. Is the quick changing Fedora/Ubuntu stand the trial?
3. What is the interaction between DSpace etc?
4. Can they both be running in HA peacefully?
5. etc.
If so please reply on this list.
I must declare that I am not going to invest INR(Money) in this. I
can't afford HA hardware at this point of time.
Would anybody like to join me in presenting a paper or experimenting?
Perhaps two different department can jointly decide to own one server
each and bring it together for HA demo teaching purposes and then use
it later individually or using the HA setup for themselves and to
educate next gen of the students.

Rajagopal
