... if this money was not paid to Microsoft for software licences for some 3000 Std XI science students, on the excuse that GNU/Linux is too-difficult for them to cope with.... o Set up a Free Software Research Lab that would have build assets of a permanent nature -- of the human kind o Invest in additional 500 computers, at approx Rs 20,000 per computer o Refurbish, many times over, the local Computer Society of India-Goa chapter's computer lab and thus create a permanent training asset which could be optimally utilised to bring in real local returns for many years down the line o Built up about a hundred community centres, each with about five computers, o Invest in about 10,000 external 33.3 kpbs external modems (purchased in bulk at approx Rs 500 each) plus hundred hours of Internet access, to phenomenally expand Net access among students already owning computers in Goa o Buy about 20,000 books (each priced approx at Rs 500) that would give students a complete how-to understanding of GNU/Linux, inclusive of one or two CDs each containing an entire distro. o ... any other ideas you have, please add to this list. [OT]? AMD system turns off by itself

AMD K6-2, slightly underclocked, turns off spontaneously. The only thing I suspect is heat damage to the CPU or mainboard, and want to confirm if possible before I buy a replacement. Turn-off is independent of activity, OS, and ambient temperature (happens in Windows, Linux, with and without A/C). System has 2 hard drives. The whole thing is about 3-4 years old. It is not a power supply problem, as I changed the SMPS with no effect. The power switch seems ok, I will check the reset button later. Possibly related: Linux requires the no-hlt boot parameter, otherwise kernel oops. At least with 2.2.x kernels. -- Satya. <URL:http://satya.virtualave.net/> I only counted 100 Dalmatians...

Hello all, good-evening. There are various perspectives to this story here. One of the most important ones to be looked into an introspected on is the need for proper documentation/training along with the machines that are being dolled out the students in goa. Lets not give the government an oppurtunity to complain. If we have given so...then lets learn from those mistakes of ours. We should make it a point to have setup the appropriate infrastructure to support such a noble cause. Any of us who has the capability to bridge the gap between the techies and the bureaucracy should make it a point to touch base with the appropriate authorities and brief them on a plan of action. Any investment can guarantee ROI only if the same is executed in a valiant fashion with due planning. If any of these important elements fail to live up to the expectations the ROI can be nullified to a great extent. So....lets get together, sit across the table, hash out a plan and chalk out a strategy to get back the earlier plan of GOG on the road again. Am ready for any sales pitches to be made to any of the imp beaureaucrats. Infact if any of us from the Bombay Gnu-LUG can help out please let us know.....we will be ready to attack. how can I start ssh in redhat 6.2

Hi all How can I start ssh service in redhat 6.2. In redhat 7.2 "/etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start " means it start ssh demon. I install openssh in redhat 6.2 but iI am not getting the service. So any one plz help me. Thanx in advance. -- Regards vaasu

PPPD is not geting activated

Hi friends, When I connect to the net using wvdial, some times, pppd is not geting activated. But connection is through. This is happening not regularly. Some times pppd will be activated and there won't be any data transmission. The problem which I am facing is the set of uploading command in my ip-up.local file is not geting executed some times. But when I connect through kppp dialer, there is no problem. pppd is geting activated always and there is proper data transmission. It is functioning well whenever I connect through it. I had set crontab for wvdial for dialing the net at regular intervel. Please suggest me how to overcome the problem. Regards, Vinod.
