Great Opportunity : Linux Initiative by Government

Dear Luggers and ASHAites, Academia and policymakers Three cheers to Nagarjuna for his intervention in Linux Initiative. (see his note below) A few thoughts on the occasion. That the Govt is thinking about gnu/linux is a great sign. It was always the case that many bureacrats , particularly from the era of 'self-reliance' know well that the world wide success of IT developers of India is rooted in the spirit and commitment of self-reliance nurtured in the early deacdes after independence. I am sorry to say that such a spirit is now seen only occasinally. Perhaps the self-reliance may have got entwined with narrow chauvinism rather than the grand democratic principle that (m. k.) gandhi demonstrtated and articulated. In a globalising world chauvinism may be an anachronism. I am afraid baby was thrown along with bathwater. The most important responsibilty on those of us who want to see the survival and growth of freedom is thus to set practical examples of such commitment to the universal principles . The government patronage to self reliance may ebb and flow . What will survive is the power distributed to many. In our context that power is freedom of knowledge and more particularly quality education, access to information and ability to communicate and ability to associate. Several developments in the IT make all this easier. Efforts are needed to make this ACTUAL. Let us create really good alternatives that can reach the masses. e-governance and education touch the masses immediately. I for one would appeal to all the techys to look into the field of education which is rapidly deteriorating and where the computers are being massively disused but it is an area where (public and private) financial resources are not in short supply.Language technologies will play a major role in the spread here. I identify the following steps in this direction. 1. Create the awareness of potential of computers to radically enhance the learning ability of children .(advocay with sound undersatnding of learning process in the age of computer) 2. Make teachers capable of allowing children to learn their subjects (not a new subject called computer) even without they being themselves experts in computers.(teacher training) 3. Localise and translate the software that is already available in english(collaboratively) (refer www.ofset.org, LetUS program of NorthWestern Univ, LOGO etc.) 4. Encourage/support the creation of local software.(overcome current hiccups of writing systems for indian scripts on computers on linux and then make computation in indian languages) It is not possible to convince myself that such an initiative can be effective with any thing other than free software foundation. This can be done only by those who can bring educationists/techys/bureaucrats on a common platform.. Can some of us meet sometime to work out some plans on these lines. jitendra Nagarjuna wrote on 25 Dec: Ministry of Information Technology organized a meeting, called `Linux India Initiative' where more than 40 people from various depts of govt IITs, NCST, BARC, CDAC, NIC, main companies like IBM, redhat, netcore, exocore etc., and also from the state govts (secreatary level representatives.) It was rather surprising that there is so much of awareness in the Govt circles. This meeting tookplace in Delhi in the Electronics Niketan close to the Nehru Stadium on Lodhi Road. Mr. S. Ramakrishnan (popularly known as Ramki) made the only presentation in the meeting. His presentation displayed that he did his home work very well, and the presentation was comprehensive. He listed various advantages of using OSS. He made it clear in the beginning itself that Linux actually stands for GNU/Linux, and so it should be understood as inclusive of GNU and not exclusive. Later Mr. Shaw (secretary MIT) chaired the meeting that went on from 3pm to 6.15pm. He took notes of almost all the speakers points and appeared serious. Prof. Sivakumar from IIT Mumbai, Barua of IIT Gauhati, were the prominent members from the Academia. Issues such as support, GUI, security, localization, took the attention of most speakers. Also since the Chairman explicilty asked every one to respond to GUI and security concerns. Keyur Shroff from NCST made a brief presentation on localization work being done at NCST, and Atul Chitnis of Exocore also made very good points. Two volumes containing several documents downloaded from the internet are circulated to the participatns. This also included some pages from our own website. I represented the users community and FSF India. The points mentioned by me were as follows: General Comments: Why cost should not be the sole reason for promoting the use of Free (Swatantra) Software? Most people argue in favor of Free Software because of the cost factor. This should not be the sole reason for promoting free software. Achieving self-reliance is often very pain-staking and difficult path. India's success stories in Space and Atomic energy are good illustrations in this regard. We don't and we should not do `cost of ownership' analysis on our path towards self-reliance. We should run for the values enshrined in our constitution, such as `self-reliance', even if they are expensive. Incidentally, though, free software is several times economical than Proprietary software. Why the expression `Linux India Initiative' is not appropriate? The term `Linux' refers to only one of the free kernels available, though the most popular. `BSD' does not use the Linux kernel, but is also a free OS. Another free kernel called HURD is also being developed by the GNU community. Since most applications that run on GNU/Linux also run on several OSs, including MS Windows, it is not appropriate to use only `Linux.' We should promote the use of free software even on propreitary OS. Most users who are already using MS windows can also use most of free software, though it is desirable to use a free OS in the long run. My suggestion is to use `Swatantra Software Initiative'. One of the main reasons why we should go for using Free Software is not merely because of the economic implications, but its use gives the users freedom, and self-reliance. The English expression ``Free Software Initiative'' also is not appropriate because, the term `free' is ambiguous, for in most widely used contexts it refers to `free of cost/charge'. Since India is committed to self-reliance it will be appropriate to use `Swatantra'. There are a few blocks in the road of taking Swatantra software to various corners of ICT use, such as the following: Using documents encoded in proprietary format, preventing free usage of data across different OS. This also encourages monopoly and facilitates lock-in. Most IT training institutions provide training mostly emphasizing or exclusively on proprietary applications. The syllabus in several colleges and Universities knowingly or unknowingly mentions not the neutral descriptions of what the student is supposed to learn, but names of proprietary applications. E.g., Excell in place of spreadsheets, or Ms-Word in place of word processor, Oracle in place of SQL, etc. At least in all Govt controlled institutions a policy should be made against this practice. A policy decision/discussion should happen regarding the software that is being developed within the Govt organizations, and its possible release under GPL or similar protected forms of free software license. The Annexure-I already contains several broad issues for discussion. Having supported the spread of Free software in the country for several years, and keeping in mind my expertise and the mandate of the institution (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai) where I am working, I wish to contribute in whatever form on the following: Setting up of Resource Centres SIG in Education sector (including schools) Introduction in curricula of engineering colleges, universities and colleges.

GUIs v/s CLI

I hear a lot of discussion about how the Linux GUI should be more user-friendly, and how all programs should have a good GUI, etc. I have one need in a GUI: consistency! But here's my main point: I see too many programs now that require X to be installed, when the program doesn't need X. Why? Why? Don't do that. As earlier you can browse the CD but now you can boot from it and Install a GNU/Linux system from it within 30 minutes. If there are no other systems required on the same harddisk, the process is fully automated. Otherwise you can make partitions manually and install. Those who have valuable data on disk cannot go for the first option On reboot you get a RedHat7.3 installation with OpenOffice, Compilers for different languages and other programs. A Terminal Server also is installed and configured, ie. It can support disk-less terminals if you have a network card. Floppy Boot files and ROM imaes for diskless PCs are also included with a lot of documentation. Motorola SM56 modem not detected and depmod error

hi, I am trying to set up modem to access Internet. I have dual boot system with Win98 and Reh Het 7.3 (2.4.18-3) modem works OK when connecting to Internet using Win98 dial up networking tools. This is my modem details Its SM56 PCI I Motorola Speakephone modem. Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI ISAPNP enabled ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A no trace of ppp support or pppd daemon on my system. I thought ppp support was provided by default by RH7.3 kernel However after have tried to manually load sm56 [root@localhost root]# modprobe sm56 $lsmod and $cat /proc/modules always have sm56 1557324 (initializing) Never stops initializing! My /etc/wvdial.conf looks like this [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/ttyS1 Baud = 57600 SetVolume = 4 Dial Command = ATDT Init1 = ATZ Init2 = AT&F&D2&C1V1S0=0E0 Init3 = ATS7=60\T0M1\N7%C1\Q3*LS1X4 Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden FlowControl = XONXOFF [Dialer connect] Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden Stupid Mode = 0 I tried other ports as well...... /dev/sm56 as one artical on web by Marvin Stodolsky suggests amd /dev/modem.Windows detected modem on COMM3 which would be /dev/ttyS2 in Linux but I haven't tried this yet. But there is this article which says it should't matter which internal port is being used by Windows for modem. I have been searching using google for almost 2 weeks, had subscribed to close to dozen mailing lists, sent close to dozen mails but still no progress. I have researched problem well (ref. e-mail addreses I know of people who had posted to some mailing lists regarding this problem) . I haven't considered option to throw away my modem yet! Any help would be very much appreciated. But when it came to picking a computer system this year, the company was more concerned with saving money. Zumiez had been using the Unix operating system to power its cash registers, but the cost about $1,000 at each of its 100 locations was more than what the company wanted to pay. In lieu of Microsoft, which makes the industry's dominant operating system, the store's technicians turned to Linux, which was free. They installed the system by themselves and added internal e-mail, Web access and spreadsheets which they didn't have before. "It was a good cost savings," said Zumiez technology director Lee Hudson. "The stores have a lot more tools than they thought they would." While Microsoft offers many of the same tools, Zumiez runs a simple network and wouldn't use all of Windows' features, said Hudson. "We just don't need the expense of a Microsoft system," he said. The computing industry might look back on 2002 as the year people got serious about Linux. The operating system has been gaining momentum as an alternative to Microsoft and proprietary versions of Unix, and 2002 was a breakout year for the technology. Linux hasn't quite reached mainstream status in business computing, but it's coming close. And it has become a major competitor to Microsoft. The reason? Linux's underlying source code the guts of the system is available for free. Developers can download it, tinker with it and customize it for a company's needs. And in a year when words like "monopoly" and "copyright" dominated much of the technology industry, "free" drew a lot of attention. No one owns Linux, although a growing number of companies are trying to make money by helping people integrate it and by selling compatible software. The technology sprung from and now leads the movement toward freely-shared, open-source software. Microsoft welcomed Linux the way some people welcomed disco mocking it, berating it and gradually accepting that it could be here for a while. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer likened open-source software to cancer last year, but the company has since toned down its stance. These days, Microsoft is aggressively insistent that Windows costs less than Linux for the total package including tech support and other factors. We offer a few other signs that 2002 was Linux's breakout year: Moving into retail Big-name retailers and automakers adopted Linux on computer systems, in most cases replacing Unix. Movie-theater operator Regal Entertainment Group rolled out a Linux system at its concessions stands in September and is testing a Linux-based kiosk for ticket purchases. Sherwin-Williams, the paint dealer, launched Linux in May throughout its 2,500 stores in North America. Chrysler and other automakers turned to Linux computers to analyze crash simulations. Building momentum were stories from companies like Amazon.com, which said third-quarter 2001 technology costs dropped 24 percent to $54 million compared with the year before. The company attributed part of the savings to switching to Linux. Linux hits PCs It's hard to find many Linux-based personal computers at stores like Circuit City; the PC landscape belongs to Microsoft Windows, with fewer than 10 percent of users favoring such alternatives as Macintosh. But this year, Linux-based PCs from such companies as Lindows.com went on sale for as low as $199 at Walmart.com, the Web site for the discount retail giant. (That price doesn't include a monitor or modem.) Linux advocate Blake Couch, who surveys computer users about Linux on his Web site, www.wewantlinux.org, called it a watershed moment. "You get name recognition and visibility when people like IBM, Hewlett-Packard and even Sun are seen to be backing Linux," he said. "But now we're talking small-town, mom-and-pop kind of stuff when you're talking about Wal-Mart." Microsoft is watching Amid the movement, Linux has become a huge discussion topic at Microsoft, according to analysts with Seattle investment firm McAdams Wright Ragen, who visited Microsoft executives recently. "Linux was described as a huge threat, and as something that every senior executive thinks about every day," according to a Dec. 11 report by analyst L. Alan Davis. Add to that observations by Rick Belluzzo, who resigned in April as Microsoft's president and chief operating officer. In an interview with trade magazine Computerworld, Belluzzo hinted that a common reaction to the subject of Linux within Microsoft was to "jump up and scream." "Linux is clearly the biggest competitive challenge that Microsoft has ever faced," Belluzzo said in the interview. "It's unlike anything before there's not a company behind it. It's very elusive, in a way." Publicly, Microsoft has toned down its rhetoric toward Linux. The company even attended this year's LinuxWorld trade show. Peter Houston, Microsoft's chief server strategist, said the company had previously taken an "emotional" view of Linux. "I don't think customers really want us to come out and talk about what's wrong with Linux," he said. "They want to talk about how Windows solves their problems." To be sure, Microsoft has gone from bashing its competitor to portraying itself as ultimately less expensive on a "total cost of ownership" basis. The idea: It's cheaper to maintain and fix a car that most mechanics know about, such as a Toyota, than one few people drive. In a report commissioned this year by Microsoft, the research firm IDC found that Windows costs up to 22 percent less than Linux over a five-year period. Most of the cost differences were due to staffing, the report said, because more work is required to support Linux systems. IBM sees returns Companies such as HP and Sun continued to integrate Linux into software and other products this year. Wednesday, rivals Matsushita and Sony announced a partnership to develop Linux for digital home devices, such as televisions. IBM has made huge investments in Linux, with 250 of its developers working full time on the operating system. The company committed $1 billion last year to the technology, and the strategy seems to be paying off. The company's Linux sales hit $216 million in the third quarter, up 83 percent from the same period the year before and 31 percent from the previous quarter, according to research firm Gartner. IBM is so entrenched in Linux that it could dictate the operating system's future in ways likely to suit its own needs, said Houston at Microsoft. "In a very real sense, IBM is the face of Linux," he said. Meantime, it seemed that nearly everyone who rode Linux's coattails in the server market saw returns. Linux revenue grew to $548 million in the third quarter, up 65 percent from the year before, according to Gartner. That trend has caused other companies, such as graphics chipmaker Nvidia, to broaden its line of Linux-compatible products. "One of the main reasons that a lot of people move to Linux is they want to save money," said Nvidia software product manager Andrew Fear. Cutting into Unix Linux seems to be taking more business from the Unix market than from Microsoft, analysts say. "I'm not sure that there's a direct fight between Linux and Microsoft yet," said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft. The key word is yet. Aberdeen Group analyst Bill Claybrook expects Linux to leapfrog Windows and replace Unix on commercial operating systems within seven or eight years. "Linux is so appealing because it isn't owned by anybody," he said. "You don't have to deal with a monster like Microsoft. You don't have to hassle with a company over contracts and licensing." I already have driver for my Motorola PCI SM56 Speakerphone (data/fax/voice) modem.I got driver files for Windows from same site http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SM56_DRIVERS.html I am using driver package http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SM56_5.1_I386.rpm [root@localhost root]# rpm -Uvh SM56_5.1_I386.rpm [root@localhost root]# sm56setup 679 Motorola SM56 SoftModem Setup for Linux Building driver... `/usr/local/sm56/sm56.o' -> `/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/char/sm56.o' Creating device /dev/sm56... Pointing /dev/modem to /dev/sm56... Adding SM56 to /etc/modules.conf... I tried using fixscript from http://www.heby.de/ltmodem (don't know if I need it since modem is not LT) but coudn't get it to run. Do I also need an updated serial driver!! This is what dmesg shows............. Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT SHARE_IRQ SERIAL_PCI ISAPNP enabled ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A no trace of ppp support or pppd daemon on my system. I thought ppp support was provided by default by RH7.3 kernel However after have tried to manually load sm56 [root@localhost root]# modprobe sm56 $lsmod and $cat /proc/modules always have sm56 1557324 (initializing) Never stops initializing! My /etc/wvdial.conf looks like this [Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/ttyS1 Baud = 57600 SetVolume = 4 Dial Command = ATDT Init1 = ATZ Init2 = AT&F&D2&C1V1S0=0E0 Init3 = ATS7=60\T0M1\N7%C1\Q3*LS1X4 Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden FlowControl = XONXOFF [Dialer connect] Phone = 144000 Password = hidden Username = hidden Stupid Mode = 0 I tried other ports as well...... /dev/sm56 as one artical on web by Marvin Stodolsky suggests amd /dev/modem.Windows detected modem on COMM3 which would be /dev/ttyS2 in Linux but I haven't tried this yet. But there is this article which says it should't matter which internal port is being used by Windows for modem. I have been searching using google for almost 2 weeks, had subscribed to close to dozen mailing lists, sent close to dozen mails but still no progress. I have researched problem well (ref. e-mail addreses I know of people who had posted to some mailing lists regarding this problem) . I haven't considered option to throw away my modem yet!
