Disk Partition Prob

Hi all ... Here is the problem : I have 20 GB HDD and I had windows 98 installed and runnning fine. I installed RedHat Linux 7.0 but during installation I need to partition my HDD like c: 6GB and linux 4GB Now the problem is I couldn't recover my remaining space in HDD. So pls Help me to recover it... "hda=nodma" at the LILO boot prompt after "linux" or whatever label that you have choosen. e.g, LILO: linux hda=nodma if this works then you can add the following line to /etc/lilo.conf append="hda=nodma" .....and rerun `lilo'. *Yes* Disabling DMA affects Disk read/write performance. *BEWARE* I am only hypothesizing!! (oooops) Please read the kernel documentation. I am currently running kernel 2.2.14 (yeah, I know, has a bug). I don't have the kernel-docs on my system right now. You could get more (definitive) info under /usr/src/linux/Documentaion/*

If you are using a chat script, then don't tell it to interpret the Login Sequence but just start `pppd' as soon as the connection is made. e.g., chat '"" ATZ OK AT(modem init strings) OK ATDT172301 CONNECT ""' Your chat script might be more complex, above is just an example. Can't connect to Rolta thru' Linux

Hi all Luggers!! Is there anyone one the lug who is using RoltaNet's dialup net services? I've been facing problems in connecting to the RoltaNet .. The logs say that I can connect to their server but then while logging on to the network, the connection hangs ,, And it even blocks my internal modem,i.e. I can't even kill the connection .. If anyone was successful in setting up dialup connection to the RoltaNet then please help me .. Connection to the VSNL dialup connection is absolutely fine and to my surprise it's much faster than what I used to get with Windows !! p.s : Contacted RoltaNet help center, but they said they din't know anything abt Linux and refused to help .. Help Me

Hi I recently moved to suse from redhat. However i could not get my sound card working (it worked with redhat). The sound card is a *crystal cs4232* ISA card. I tried to use the kernel driver by editing the /etc/modules.conf but in vain. Also can anyone please help me in configuring my internal modem Motorola SM56. Please provide detailed steps to get these both working. Thank you in advance. Paresh C.

Permanent Setting of DMA

I edited rc.local and DMA is now turned off everytime I load linux I would like to know if there is some file in which hdparm settings are stored so that DMA is turned off *permanently* In the boot process I still get the hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } errors. Is there some way that I can disable echoing of these errors? (It kinda gives me an uneasy feeling ;-) Just for curiosity: When I checked out /var/log/demsg I found out this line hda: 8452080 sectors (4327 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=526/255/63, UDMA(33) Also the BIOS gives the following info about my HDD: Pri Master : 6.01 ST34311A Ultra DMA Mode-2 , S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK It means that my HDD supports UDMA , then why I have to disable it to keep things normal? Does disabling it have effect on the performance?

I have been using Linux since RHL 5.2 and haven't faced any major problems since then. However with PCQ Linux 7.1 , which was distributed by PCQuest in it's July 2001 issue,I am facing severe problems as described below. I have Cyrix MII 300 Processor,64 MB SDRam,700 MB Hard Disk Space reserved for Linux,Yamaha Sound Card,Sis 6215c PCI graphic adapter (No prob with this thing though) Now whenever I start playing mp3 using either mpg123 in character mode or XMMS in GNOME and work on something else like just managing files or editing a text file ,etc.. the LINUX simply hangs! Even if I press <alt><F2> for another terminal nothing happens. Also while multitasking the quality of sound is pathetic. I reinstalled RHL 6.2 and I did not find any of the problems.Linux is as stable as it is known for. I tried not to do *any* other jobs while playing mp3 and still 7.1 hangs ! Please help me as I am very frustrated by this as I love mp3's as much as I love Linux. P.S. mount: incorrect major/minor version

Anyone remember this (or similar) error we were getting a while back? I don't think we found a solution, did we? Well, Nikhil Jagtiani recently fonud out that the major/minor numbers to which the error message refers are kernel version numbers, not device node numbers!
