Hi All,
I have planned a workout at FOSS.in for Sahana which I have put up on
the project wiki here,
http://wiki.sahana.lk/doku.php?id=dev:foss_in_2008_ideas
Request you guys to take a look and if the project interests you,
would be glad to have some contributors to the project.
I have contributed to the Messaging module for SMS features using
SMSTools v3 in my Summer of Code 2008.
So in case you have worked on SMS related interactive applications,
your input would be helpful.
And we are also looking for Language/Translation contributors for
various Indic languages.
Appropriate mailing list information can be found here:
http://wiki.sahana.lk/doku.php?id=dev:mailing_list_policy
Feel free to ping me in case you are willing to contribute to the project in
any way or participate in the workout if you are attending the event in
Bangalore.
Thanks & Regards,

Hi,
Being involved with linux now for a long time, I have always researched the level of linux compatibility before buying any new hardware. I recently needed to buy a cheap wireless USB adapter (cheap because, i think i'd probably use it only a couple months before my laptop's bmc4310 wireless card is nicely supported -- ehe, that's an entirely different topic -- no, i have not got it to work on Fedora 10).
Well, this didn't turn out as easy as I expected. Sure, 90% USB wireless cards just work with linux, but what if I chose a random one and it turns out to be from that 10%, so, I began researching. Unfortunately, a lot of 'cheap' wireless cards, don't come with tech. specs, so you have no clue what chipset the card is based on. For example looking at http://tinyurl.com/6p8tc3 (ebay.com search URL), I didn't know what to buy. I would have to research each of those individually, eliminating by price. Anyways, long story short, I got frustrated with the fact that I have to do this 'research' every time I need some new hardware, so, I thought of setting this up:
http://tuxcompatible.com
This is a 'classifieds' site where people looking for linux compatible hardware (/software/periperals/devices/services ..etc), can shorten or eliminate the research step.
I would like to invite hardware vendors (or request you to invite those hardware vendors you know) who know the linux compatibility of devices they sell, to create their listings here.
To prospective buyers, I request, please let the vendors know that you learned about their product from tuxcompatible.com, so that they are encouraged to keep posting.
...and to anyone else, I welcome you to comment or suggest improvement. You may also choose to help me out -- http://tuxcompatible.com/drupal/node/2
Please read more at the site.
Thank you for your time,
regards,
- steve
Hi,
Firstly, thanks all, for the comments about the site (I really appreciate it) and also about the suggestions on making bmc4310 work. I am sorry, I wasn't too clear about that bit, I should have said haven't got it working in my setup yet -- which means with WAP-PSK support. Right now, I am using the broadcom's (proprietory with binary blob) wl module[1] which works only in open networks (I have not tried WEP). Even using the windows driver with ndiswrapper works with just open and WEP enabled networks, not with WAP-PSK ...anyways, like I said, native upstream kernel support will come in a couple of months[2].
Anyways, about jtd's comments:
> Plenty of resources are already available on the net.
> However these are mostly about hardware available in the US and
> Europe. Hardware available here are substantially different and for
> shorter durations. So it is a constant battle to keep finding out the

Exactly ! ...and that's the reason why I set up tuxcompatible.com. Most of the times, the hardware available locally would use same or similar chipsets, but they would be branded by different companies (sometimes chinese, taiwanese or korean) and this leads to confusion. The resources available on the net usually just discuss compatibility and/or performance. There is no (or at least no 'well known') linux centric *marketplace* online -- this is what I hope to achieve with tuxcompatible.com (or even encourage professional web-developers/companies to consider as an viable bussiness).

Well, I totally agree with the unwillingness to understand compatibility issues ! My dad or Uncle (who are not just linux but /computer/ newbies) should not have to worry about the level of linux support a device has when purchasing it. It should *just work* ....of course this is far from ideal right now. The next best thing to do, IMHO, was to at least give then one place where they can go to purchase their hardware. That's what tuxcompatible.com hopes to achieve (or ever encourage ...blah blah ..)

Oh, that's is a different problem altogether. Users apathetic to change should best not venture to linux until they are ready, else it just screws up the experience for them.

Debian Installer lenny release candidate 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Debian Installer team[1] is proud to announce the first release
candidate of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Lenny. Improvements
in this release of the installer
* Improved support for Live-CD installation media (much faster and
more reliable than earlier releases);
* Support for some NAS devices based on Marvell's ARM-compatible
Orion chip:
o QNAP TS-109/TS-209 and TS-409;
o HP Media Vault mv2120;
o Buffalo Kurobox Pro;
* Installer images for Netwinder have been added again;
* Installer images for i386 Xen guests[2]
* Support for hardware speech synthesis (speakup) has been added;
* Upgrade of packages early in pkgsel, for example to get
available security updates for base system packages;
* Support for loading firmware from (removable) media during the
installation;
* i386/amd64: support for installing to and loading firmware from
MMC/SD cards;
* New translations: Welsh, Irish, Northern Sami, Serbian (Amharic
and Marathi were added in beta releases).
Known issues in this release
* i386: for this release, installation from floppy disk is not
supported;
* PowerPC: the graphical installer should work on almost all
systems with ATI graphics cards, but probably not others;
* touchpads should work with the graphical installer, but support
may be suboptimal - if you experience problems, you should use
an external mouse instead.
See the errata[3] for details and a full list of known issues.
We do need your help to find bugs and further improve the installer,
so please try it.
Installation CDs and DVDs, other media, errata, and everything else
you'll need are available from the Debian Installer web site[4].
The Debian Installer team thanks everybody who has contributed to this
release.
To: pyroom-team(a)lists.launchpad.net
Hi,
good news everyone! PyRoom has been packaged for Fedora and Debian. Now
that Ubuntu Jaunty Development has begun, PyRoom has also been pulled
into Ubuntu from Debian SID automatically.
Thanks to Sven Lankes (Fedora) and Kartik Mistry (Debian) for their
work!
Bruno, I've edited our homepage repo with install instructions for
Fedora, would you please pull rev34 to the server?
Hi,
I have been telling a lot of people about ubuntu/linux and its advantages
over windows etc in most cases. But the stumbling block that I find is
knowing or recommending a one stop shop for all sorts of hardware which is
linux compatible. In particular small irritating stuff like memory card
readers, all in one printers, webcams and similar stuff.
Can anybody here tell whether such an intelligent hardware vendor been found
yet in Mumbai or Pune? The advantages in the niche linux market to such a
vendor are enormous and will help the linux movement too as technology
adoption will be hassle free.
Thanks for posting that link. Yes, I came across that once when I was looking for some definite resource for linux compatible hardware.
I would really like tuxcompatible.com (or any site with the same intention, really) to be the place one would go with the intention of *buying* the hardware/device/service ...etc, not only researching it's compatibility.
To that end, i can imagine a possibility working with various web sites dedicated to listing or discussing compatibility and performance of hardware (for example, pciids.sourceforge.net, linux-printing.org, phoronix.com, linux-wireless.org, thinkwiki.org ...etc) and somehow integrate references to these in the the listings on tuxcompatible.com. Unfortunately, I know jack about the technologies involved to make this happen.
So, yeah, I could use some help :-).
Thanks for the comment, it make me feel less stupid for having done this :-).
Btw, I could always use more help in letting people know about this site, since it'll work only if it has enough people using it. So, please spread the word around.
Thanks and regards,
- steve
