An enterprising group has taken on a radical approach in attracting users to Linux: switch a whole town! Dubbed "Lindependence 2008" (a.k.a. LIN08), this event strives to switch citizens in Felton, Calif., for at least a week from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The initiative, loosely led by Ken Starks in Austin, Texas, and Larry Cafiero in Felton, has taken the idea of introducing normal computer users to Linux to screaming heights. By July 28, those in Felton who decide to take the plunge will go Microsoft-free for a week or more. http://www.lindependence.net/ We need something like this here.. :D Regards, Sameep

Dear Friends, I need LAMP Trainers to work with me on a project, on a purely commercial association. Obviously, I would love to look for vertical expertise in each area of LAMP, to create and impart course ware driven knowledge to an audience that can't think beyond (sic!) *other, proprietory* technologies. The requirement is for 4 hours a day, 3 days a week. I need people who are passionate about their expertise area, and have a deep understanding of their subject, and huge practical experience too. Hello All, Greetings from IT for Change. I had earlier shared information about a new FLOSS project that we had started working on - FLOSSInclude (http://www.flossinclude.org/) I am writing to you again to give you details about the planned activities in this project and to seek your support for the same.The FLOSSInclude project is an international research project in FLOSS and open standards which aims to study the requirements of increasing the deployment, development and societal impact of FLOSS in Africa, Asia and Latin America. ITforChange (http://www.itforchange.net/) and Sarai, India (http://www.sarai.net/) are the two organizations in India, which will be a part of this project. As part of this project IT for Change seeks to focus on ?FLOSS and the public sector?, and will study the role of public sector agencies in procuring, organizing and stimulating production of FOSS, including using FLOSS for public administration, and sharing of FLOSS applications among public sector bodies. We specifically aim to understand; (1) the context of, and requirements for, a wide scale deployment and use of FLOSS within the public sector agencies in India, (2) the issues and challenges involved in building an ecology for the development of such FLOSS and applications that have the most development and governmental uses, and, (3)the issues and challenges in fostering sharing software in the public sector. Understanding such techno-social as well as social factors would be useful to understand,conceptualize and design programs that would further the use of FLOSS in these sectors. Our activities in the initial phase of this project will include - 1. Collection and analysis of data on government policies on FOSS and open standards, and on FOSS implementation in Indian public sector 2. A study on the issues of perceptions regarding software choices within the public sector 3. Undertaking a techno-social analysis of success and/or failure of FOSS implementations in the public sector As we launch the first phase, we request your support for gathering information in the above mentioned area. Please do let us know of any organizations/individuals/resources which might prove useful in gathering such information. Looking forward to your support through the project. wlan to lan to internet

I have a machine w/ kubuntu w/ a wlan0 (runing w/ ndiswrapper) connecting to the net via braodband modem. I now want to connect my laptop to the net thru the broadband modem via the wifi. I followed this link: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274790-highlight-adhoc+wireless.html I managed to get the laptop talking to the kubuntu machine and I can even browse the net on the laptop. The problem is that I have lost internet connectivity on the kubuntu machine :( . No ping, no web access, zilch. I have the follwoing setup: modem <-> (pub.lic.I.P) PC <-> wifi (192.168.1.202) <-> (192.168.1.204) laptop I have made the requisite changes in the commands shown on this page. where is the problem ? do I need any changes to this line ? route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 10.0.1.1 I've changed it to route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 192.168.1.202 regards, Sharukh -- Dr. Sharukh K. Hi, I recently got hold of the latest prototype of the above data logger that is being manufactured by a Mumbai firm. In looks it is an unimpressive rectangular box without a display. It is meant purely for logging trackpoints and waypoints. It claims to be 32 channel and has 4 MB RAM. It has 1. power/lo battery LED 2. Satellite LED - glows red on satellite acquisition 3. Computer/Memory full LED 4. Waypoint LED 1. Power button 2. Computer button 3. Waypoint button It runs on a Nokia cell phone battery and can be charged with a standard nokia charger. There is a serial port and a screw to attach an antenna. The antenna comes with a 3 metre cable and has a powerful magnet. A serial cable is provided with two outlets - one for downloading the GPS data and the other for direct instrument to computer reading. The cable also has a bell-push for recording waypoints. Usage: in a car, stick the antenna on the roof, the instrument inside and tape the way point bellpush to the steering wheel - similar arrangement for a bike. Walking, keep the unit in a pocket, the antenna in a shirt pocket and the waypoint bell push in your hand. Getting data: Connect to a PC using a serial-usb cable. Type cat /dev/ttyUSB0 > filename.txt, and the data is transferred. It can be converted to gpx format using: http://nrcfosshelpline.in/confman/browser/branches/sparc2gpx/ sparc2gpx.py Accuracy: Much better than my old garmin 72. I had walked around on the footways of a park with the device this morning in heavily overcast conditions with heavy tree cover - the paths marked here are without tweaking - just join-the-dots: http://openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=16.6938&lon=74.4613&zoom=18 Incidentaly the device also has the logo of FSF India on the top, so I suppose this signifies that everything in the device is free software. debian mirror (lenny)?

Hi, does anyone have a full/partial debian mirror ( dists - lenny , arch - i386/amd64 )? or anyone have fat (& unlimited bandwidth) to update one ( I have a june 2007 one - total download required would be about 20GB - binary only ). problem updating lenny mirror on slow pipe is by the time mirror is half update, a quarter of it would have already changed!.. Let me know if someone in mumbai/pune has the resources. Regards, Karunakar
