[OT?]: Linux O. S. with LAN - MTNL Triband

Hello List, Logged on to Triband's home page today, and the marquee scrolling on their page (just below the flash animation) says, "For best Triband Usage ... Linux O. S. with LAN port..." (Did someone notice this before me?) So, their department (dealing with Triband) realizes that there are individuals who use Triband with a Linux distro! All that they have to do now, is introduce Unlimited plans at more reasonable rates (read 'lower') for users. (hehe, this must be on so many wishlists ;) ) But I wonder, what sort of a support will they provide for GNU/Linux users? Distro-specific or will they ask users to do "command-line" tasks for configuring, in case the user decides to switch to manual configuration. Shell Script for resizing an array of images

Hello List, I had a task of resizing more than 30 images one by one (of sizes as large as 3000 x 2000 pixels or a little lesser than that) to a size 640 x 480 pixels. I'm sure, a lot of you click high quality photos (images of size > than 1 MB) and want to resize them to send it through email, say as a zip file (if the receiver wants a copy of the photos). One can upload the photographs to a photo-sharing website, but one wouldn't have to log on everytime to view / show the photos. I used the command line tool called "convert " (by ImageMagick) to convert them. Though I knew, I could play with files in shell scripts I didn't know anything about the syntax. So, I searched and found this document http://tldp.org/linuxfocus/English/July2001/article211.shtml Understood the syntax on the page, and wrote a script to complete the above mentioned task. #!/bin/sh for f in $*; do convert -resize 640x480 $f t-$f done I have one question. Is the $* is for argument number (or its type) for the file that would have to be converted? There's one thing that I noted while this script was executing. The processor usage was around 93-100 % and the memory usage was jumping up and down. screen resolution drops down to 640 * 480 after monitor change

hi after installation if i change my monitor on ubuntu 7.04 it does not take the resolution higher than 640 * 480 but the monitor is capable of higher resolutions if i switch back to the original monitor on which the installation was done then it allows me to increase the resolution please help , how do i tell ubuntu desktop to ignore the monitor regards kamal

[OT] Airtel Broadband. Demand ADSL with router.

Hello All, A client of mine subscribed to Airtel Broadband. I told the client to insist on an ADSL modem with router. This is like the self contained MTNL modem. Its advantage over the regular Airtel modems is that it does not need a pc to dial pppoe. The router ensures that the pcs are not directly exposed to the net and no pc needs to be dedicated as a server. The Airtel guy who came to install did not understand the idea first and after some beating about the bush, said that he will have to contact his tech. guys. Next day, they installed the wanted unit. So if you are using Airtel, you can insist on the independent modem cum dialer. If your net is down, at least they won't blame your pc or its interfaces. -- Regards, Rony. Knock Knock Who's There? Mandrake 2007

Hello All, Having heard a lot about Mandriva 2007, I decided to try it out on my laptop. It loaded well. Before actual install, some device configurations were necessary to be done like display driver, boot manager (changing lilo to grub), and some minor settings. Installation was smooth. It detected everything except my wireless card but it gave a message with a url to download certain firmware packages and they (*.fw) were downloaded and saved to the /lib/firmware directory. However wireless setup was a Pain..ITA. There was no direct link to up/down the interface and its a long route via 'configure your computer'. The kde wireless manager is lousy compared to the one in Kubuntu. At one time I had to use command line to control the interface. However even though verything was setup in the ifcfg-eth1 file, sometimes the sudo ifup eth1 command would not work properly. The software updater cannot find any repo site. On the web too I found some mirror sites but no description to manually add them to the package manager. I have yet to try out multimedia. In short, Kubuntu is much easier to configure and setup compared to Mandriva. "And the first prize goes to ....Kubuntu". Yeeaay. what's on the ubuntu dvd, any ideas?

hello all, I am doing an installation of a few computers with orca (the screen reader) for blind people. it is at a very remote village where internet is not very strong. I have to do a apt-get install for gnome-common and also apt-get build-dep gnome-orca. both this commands connect to the internet and need to download the packages. now what I am trying to understand is whether dvd is worth the download? will gnome-common be available on the dvd? I am aware that orca is indeed available so no worrys. I am only worried about the dependencies which apt-get downloads from internet. if dvd has most of what is on the web based repositories, then my requirements will be fulfilled and to make the computers accessible, I wont need internet. regards, Krishnakant.

hi i want to install kde on about 25 hosts on which ubuntu 7.04 is already installed i use apt-get install kubuntu-desktop to install kde it is a 198 mb download i dont want to download 198 mb on each host can i download on one location and use it to install kubuntu on all desktops regards kamal
