Dear friends, Please excuse me for posting this again with corrected dates. This year, LinuxAsia's main goal is to promote open source innovations from India. Hence, the organising committee (FOSII) invites 'technologists' and 'innovators' from all over India to speak at LinuxAsia 07. The speaker registration page is available at http://www.linuxasia.net/la07/speakers1/speaker.php The broad genre of talks that are invited include: a) Presentations on innovative open source projects developed in India or by Indians. b) Presentations on latest developments in key open source technologies and tools (ex; Eclipse, MySQL, Mono, etc) c) Presentations on initiatives to promote open source innovations in India (ex: Apache) The three-day event has been divided into following broad technology-verticals: First day (31st Jan 07): Trends and innovations in overall open source technologies and desktop technologies Second day (1st Feb 07): Technology trends and innovations w.r.t. software development and databases Third day (2nd Feb 07): Technology trends and innovations w.r.t. tools for IT implementation and network management Please note, that the speaker registration will end on 19th January 2007, and all speaker presentations will be finalised by 22nd January 2007 (evening). MTNL Triband - SSH

Hi ! I have a Linux box connected to MTNL triband by D-Link Dsl 502 router. The triband connection also has a Live ip. my query is: 1.) I have opened the iptables for ssh port 22, on the linux box but still cannot get to thru from outside. I have connected the router in bridge mode. Please suggest changes required in the router to enable SSH. Thanks Hozefa.

This is were you are terribly mistaken the whole idea, even a practically proven fact! When you give your software to some one, 1. he uses it 2. If he feels it good in doing his job, a. he suggests the same to his friends. But, his friends also wish to test is themselves so he needs to *distribute*. b. he thinks he can help you in improving the software still better, so he contributes 3. He find some bugs in the software and if he is skilled, gets you some patches so your software becomes less buggy. Hence, when he shares/distributes the software with his friends, more eyes are looking into the software and hence more bugs get *solved* and your software improves. 4. So, its not the only user you gave your software to, but its 10 and 100s of others who voluntarily involve themselves in improving *your* software, just because they like it and think it is useful than others. You need not spend *millions* in this manner to make your software reach high quality, feature richness or get a huge user base. And, a developer who has the skill to create software, and if he is indeed really interested in helping the community with good quality software, will indeed follow the FOSS philosophy we all stand for and not the one which you have misunderstood. Yes, i agree who writes the software has the right to do whatever he wants with it, but he has no right to prevent distribution of the software and still want it to call it as *free software*, let him call it as proprietary software, we have nothing against him then. If you call something as *free software* then free distribution becomes a right. It actually causes the software to reach more users, get more contribution, see much more improvement in quality and hence reach higher heights! If you do not understand or go along with our ideologies of sharing software as knowledge, then our mailing list is not the place to express your ideologies which can not be accepted by us. Science, Education and Learning in Freedom, and gnowledge portal launch

Conference Announcement A one day conference on "Science, Education and Learning in Freedom (SELF)" is being organized by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR on 2nd February 2007, at Homi Bhabha Auditorium, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Colaba, Mumbai, India. At this conference distinguished speakers from around the world will talk about free software, free knowledge and open standards, specifically in the context of science and education. On the same occasion, a multilingual community portal (gnowledge.org) of free knowledge for education, developed by the computer laboratory of HBCSE, TIFR will also be launched. A snapshop version of the portal will be distributed on a DVD at the conferencee, which includes offline content of wikipedia.org. [OT?] Is there a TCS LUG?

Hi, Is there anyone from TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) on this list and do you guys know of a TCS LUG? When I was recruited into TCS I was told that there's a Linux User Group in TCS as well. But I couldn't find anything through the TCS employee portal. My search has been even more difficult since I work in client office.
