What you are asking for is a really nice idea, but I think we can create some easy solutions within existing and popular linux desktop environments.. hence maintaining compatiblity.. for example, Is this close to what you are talking about? http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=29692 or maybe you can use this as a starting point, and amend it suitably in any way you deem fit. maybe there are simlar ideas on having some kisk mode "animated desktop" on gnome/xfce too.. ? otherwise, multiple desktops also give us an ability to configure the UI in any way.. for example we can rename desktop 1,2,3,4 to somethng like multimedia, internet, Office, games.. etc.. and then have very large and visible, easily identifiable, relevant icons on each of them.. (just an idea)

NFS mount problem between 2.6.17-3 and 2.4.24

sarge with linux-2.6.17-3 as an nfs server. Another machine with woody and linux-24.4.24 fails to mount the exports from the sarge machine. mount simply hangs without errors. syslog on sarge says "rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from xxx.yyy.zz.aa:868 for /xxyyzz (/xxyyzz)" tried rpc.mountd with --no-nfs-version 3. any ideas? -- Rgds JTD

TATA Indicom Data Card (Huawei EC321)

Hi, Has anyone on the list managed to get the TATA Indicom CDMA data card working on Linux? As of now, the card is detected and configured as /dev/ttyUSB0. I guess I am missing the modem AT commands that I would require while configuring KPPP. -- Regards Vivek J. Patankar
