I have worked on 8051 + RF devices. Good support, good range and the
normal whip antennas are fine. Problem with using GPS is
(a) lack of detailed maps for India
(b) cost
An 8051 with RF chip should do the basic processing. Else put in a DSP
for more computation and use the 8051 as the front end for
communication. You are not looking at a fancy OS on it, right. these
RF can be configured for directional transmission by placing a
directional antenna at the transmitter end.
