Hi All, Yesterday I read an articall about the Simputers ( SIMple comPUTER ) which are meant for the satisfing the need ofthe peoples from rural area in India. Peoples those are just literate or low qualified but still wants to know & learn about the computer can take the great advantage of the simputer. According to an artical, one software team of IIT is developing these simputers & it will probably be avaliablein the market from November. Mr. Mark Mathayan of IIT encore team said that, simputers are designed & developed by keeping in mind the percentage of literacy in India. He further said that, these simputers will be avaliable with a low prize of approx. Rs. 9,000 /- only. These Simputers will have all the facilities which are avaliable in normal computer. But they will not be working on MS-Windows, rather they will work on LINUX, which is freely avaliable world wide Many foreign companies have shown their interest in this project & asked for the rights for the production of these simputers. But IIT has not given the rights to anybody as it wants the simputer to be purely Indian & wants some Indian company to come up & start the production. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If we forget rest of the part of this artical & concentrate on using LINUX on the simputers, I think this is a golden opportunity for us to wide sprade the Linux in India & making the peoples aware of Linux. We can even add it in our projects TO - DO list. So.... What U guys say? Think on it............. I've always known you can do real cool things in emacs with elisp, but never got around to learning how. Has anyone out there significantly tweaked their .emacs files? If so care to send me an example of the stuff you've done?

} On the 3rd day i.e. today, I deleted all the 3 linux partitions of the disk & accessed the free space from the windows ( fdisk ) & scanned it for any bad sector, which I didn't found on the disk so I again partitioned them for linux ( in linux setup) But still get the same message as before i.e. " An error occurred while transferring......... " $ { WHY IS THIS MESSAGE COMMING UP? WHERE IS THE MISTAKE? } $ { HOW CAN I COME OVER IT ? } Here during the partitioning I got another message that, " Automatic Partitioning Failed There is not sufficient disk space in order to automatically partition your hard disk. You will need to manually partition your disk for RHL to install." Plz choose the tool U would like to use the partitioning your system for RHL - [ Disk Druid & fdisk ] Before this installation, I had deleted the partition which was created for scanning in windows. So I had around 4GB of free disk space, But still I got the above message. Hi All, - - - - - - - - - - - I am providing u this detail story b'coz I want u to understand the problem properly & give me out the correct solution. The mail is divided in the 3 parts b'coz of the restirision on the mail size - - - - - - - - - - - Since last 3 days I am trying to install RHL 7.1 on my pc but, every time my installation fails b'coz of failure of disk partitioning or due to system hanging, yet I'm not able to install RH on my pc & I'm still trying...... I have kept around 4GB of my disk space, to install linux on my m/c the total disk space I assign in the following way. /boot 54 MB hda8 $ { what is the min space we can assign to /boot? } swap 133 MB hda9 / remaining all space hda10 ( around 3.7 GB ) $ { Do I need to create any other partion for the installation & for improving the performance, as I found the system is quite slow in the 1st installation? } [ I read in one of the how-to (on the CD) that we can install linux with these 3 partitions, so I followed it ] [ NOTE: I'm not able to partition the disk with Disk Druid as it is not setting up /boot partition saying that your boot partition is >1024 cylinders & can not be mounted, so I used fdisk instead ( after reading the info & help ) & I found it very easy. ] o.k... On the very 1st day, the installation goes fine ( with little difficulties) but there was still some errors such as after shuting down the system it was giving an error - * general protection fault : fooo cpu : 0 EIP : 0050 [<00008881>] [snip] . . . . . . . . . . [snip] * dos partitions were not able to mount [ I tryed ' mount ' command along with editing /etc/fstab file but it didn't work, leaving the message vfat partitions can not be mounted ] $ { why it was not mounting the partitioning ? } * I was not getting a proper screen resolution. which I wanted to solve. So I finally desided to re-install RHL. Sorry for inconveniance, SAMEER :)

For booting problems for partitions beyond 1024 cylinder, you > should use loadlin. This shouldn't be a problem with the newer versions of LILO (or Grub). You just need to add "lba32" to /etc/lilo.conf Unfortulately if you use disk druid during RHL installation it still complains if you use a boot partition > 1024

dear all, an acquitance's company in andheri needs an expert in system integration for one day. this company is involved in iso quality certification (like iso 9000, 9002 etc). the date it would need the expert is 23 /24 july. ideally, the person should have B.E. or equivalent deg with some experience..... the money paid for a day's service will be quite ok (as i think it, of course..) pls call Mr. K. Hello, I just installed PCQ Redhat 7.1. on my new P4 1.5 on 10gb hdd with win2000 insstalled on the 40gb. i am able 2 run both win200 and linux with dual booting my prob is that in haste i forgot to configure the vga card, i have asus v3005 32mb, this was not shown in the list. i learnt from a friend that i could've used sis 300 (is it in the list shown by redhat??). now i am not able 2 startx. my question is how do i configure X windows to take the correct drivers for with re-installing linux all over again. my vga card is agp asus v3005 32mb ram monitor is lg studioworks 563N please help! nilesh
