Last Date for comments - National Policy on ICT in School Education

Dear All, The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has released a draft 'National Policy on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) In School Education' (see http://education.nic.in/secedu/ict.pdf , I have also attached the policy). While the earlier policy draft did not have even a single mention of FOSS, the current draft states in para 5.3.2 "Free ware, free and open source software applications will be preferred". Certain other sections which are appreciable are - "4.1.2 The ICT literacy programme will endeavour to provide a broad set of generic skills and conceptual knowledge and not focus on mastering the use of specific software applications." It will be great if you can send in your feedback to MHRD, appreciating/welcoming the preference accorded to FOSS and also requesting if FOSS can be made mandatory instead of just preferred. (The FOSSCOMM letter is present here - http://fosscomm.in/LetterForEducationPolicy . Hi, Ayttm-0.5.0-111 has been released! There have been a number of improvements under the hood. Changes Changes: * Users can specify a different character encoding for each of their chat rooms/windows. There is also a new preference added called "encodings", which can be used to specify the list of encodings to be used to decode incoming data in case it is not in UTF-8. * Pong for the IRC ping. This enables ayttm to be used with servers that require a pong to keep a connection alive * Conform to Debians Lintian standards * Multiple fixes to irc * Multiple fixes to jabber * Fixed multiple UI related issues * Lots of bug fixes * A new contributor in the form of Piotr Stefaniak :) * Conform to Fedora packaging standards by providing a workaround for libtool to enable use of *.so for dynamically loading modules. using orca to read pdf files in evince

Hi, I cud get orca to start up and have configured it. But it is not able to read any page which is open in the evince document reader. The key binding for "reading entire document" is KP_add. I wonder what that means. Can anybody help?. Orca is only able to read menus or echo typed characters, words etc and that too is hardly heard (voice is cut). Regards, Kussh

VOB file merge and conversion

I am new to linux. I am using Fedora 10. Recently i bought an iPod. I can't get to load my DVDs on my iPod because there are mutiple .vob files and .vob is not supported format of iPod. List, Off late I've become yet-another-it-guy showing symptoms of 'busy-at-work'. I haven't been able to answer queries or follow up with people who have emailed me asking about Linux / requested media. I'm likely to forward many or all of these to the mailing list for media requests / queries. Quite a few newbies, so may be, they'll be advised to check the mailing list etiquette before, but I guess, some may read it, some may forget it! Also, if someone happens to log on to linux.org, please feel free to change the contact person (I seem to have changed it to my name, when I was sort-of so-called 'reasonably active') for the GLUG-BOM list / group. flv conversion to ogg or mp3 files --video to audio files

Hi all, Does anybody know of any FOSS program in linux which can convert from flv format (video) to mp3 or ogg (audio) format. I am using the file conversion service at zamzar.com and it takes pretty long to upload large files. It would be nice if there was a program for this sort of work. Also earlier i had heard about a site to convert pdfs to mp3 files but can't seem to find the site. if anybody knows of a good site or software pls let me know. I have been trying to update my knowledge and many times the eyes get tired and so audio would help supplement the learning process. Thanks for any help. Regards, Kussh
